It\u2019s a short drive from Cahills Crossing to Ubirr. It would have been a reasonable morning walk but no pedestrian traffic is allowed in this section of the park. The Ubirr Rock Art Gallery<\/a> is claimed to be one of the finest examples of ancient rock art in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the one kilometre nature walk through the site there are a series of galleries painted on the overhangs and cliff faces. We found them fascinating. Visually the longer we stood in certain galleries the more images became apparent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information panels acknowledge that many of the painted images have been drawn over or repainted numerous times over thousands of years. Apparently this was common practice, the most recent paintings date to 2,000 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The painting of the now extinct Thylacine pictured below is thought to be a thousand years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our walk concludes on a rocky outcrop providing a fabulous view of the surrounding countryside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
