Stayed: Discovery Park MI, $40.50, S20.70830, E139.49528  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a cold start in Mary Kathleen we have a relatively short drive on to Mount Isa City. The road makes it an easy drive, just a few road trains and caravans most heading in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coming over the crest Mount Isa<\/a> comes into view the twin tall chimneys and mountains of red brown tailing defining the valley. We do the usual lap of the city centre before continuing on to the CP is Winston about 2 kms north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mount Isa mine is considered the richest copper, silver and zinc deposit it the world. However we heard on the news only a couple of weeks ago that Glencore the Swiss multinational that operates the mine have announced its closure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All that aside we unload the bike and take a ride into the centrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The photos above are about the best we can do. Mount Isa has no classic colonial buildings, the banks are all relatively modern and like the tattoo shop ready to be popped on a truck and relocated somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the upside our site at the caravan park has its own ensuite bathroom enabling Pam to wash her hair twice a day. Our neighbours suggest the Hard Time Mine Tour, so we book and cycle off shortly before our allotted time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve all done guided tours where there\u2019s some guy who makes silly comments, asks questions that have no answer or volunteers to be the test crash dummy for everything. Meet our guy, he turned a two hour tour into three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other than that our guide Steve with his 40+ years of underground mining experience and who co-incidentally looked like a spitting image of my brother-in-law Alan (maybe a couple of inches shorter) was great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So that was Mount Isa, we thought of going to the club for dinner, but remembering it was state of origin night we decided on a quiet evening in the Jayco. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
