Travelled: 720 kms from Moore Park Beach to Armstrong Beach  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visited: Calliope River, Yeppoon and Armstrong Beach  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stayed: Anderson Beach CP, $45pn S27.716660, E152.27796  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Escaping Moore Park Beach we head back toward Bundaberg only to find that roadworks have the link road through Rosedale closed so where forced to drive the long way to the Bruce Hwy adding an extra 50 kms through Gin Gin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rest of the day is spent dodging pot holes as we rumble along at 95 kph. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Come 3pm I\u2019ve had enough, our original plan of a stop at Mount Larcom becomes Calliope River free camp. It\u2019s a lovely spot overlooking the Calliope River adjacent to the old Bruce Hwy bridge. Given the price of a night in a caravan park it\u2019s no wonder these free camps are so popular. By dusk I think there must have been 100 or more caravans and motorhomes enjoying a free night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Damn it\u2019s a cold morning in Calloipe, I fire up the diesel heater and jump back in bed. It\u2019s not for long as it\u2019s still 50 minutes to Rockhampton. So it\u2019s a quick breakfast and back on the road again. Rather than a walk this morning we find a parking spot at Rockhampton\u2019s aquatic centre and do our laps. $3 pp entry for seniors and the pool a very pleasant 27\u00ba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today\u2019s exercise program complete we make the 30 minute drive on to Yeppoon another one of our regular favourite places. As usual we stay at the Beachside CP, $71 a night for a beach front site, so we won\u2019t be eating out in Yeppoon. But we do rack up nearly 20 kms on the bikes every day. The rail trail is excellent as is the ride out to Keppel Marina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have previously done a post on Yeppoon so enough of that. After 4 nights we make for the road early again, back to Rockhampton and the pool for some more laps, then breakfast in the carpark and a long drive north on the Bruce Hwy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four hours later we turn at Sarina for Armstrong Beach. Finding diesel for $1.64 per litre on the way is a bonus. The small independent fuel stops can be 20-30c cheaper per litre, a good saving if you need 60 or 70 litres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Armstrong Beach has no shop it\u2019s just a scattering of houses over half a dozen streets. The CP is small and the sites very tight, very 1960\u2019s. The manager shuffles around and finds us a space long enough for the Jayco and we settle in. It\u2019s a friendly place everyone says hello and we soon work out most everyone has been here for years or they stay here every year for the winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where invited to drinks around the fire tonight at 5 pm, as I said they are a friendly bunch. Pretty sure where the youngest by 10 years is so. You get the feeling the aged pension goes along way in Armstrong Beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve perfected pork belly in the air fryer and we return from drinks to a baked dinner which Pam tops off with a very peppery gravy, pictured below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a very pleasant couple of days we make ready for the road once again. We have a booking at Bowen tonight, a 3 hour drive mostly in the rain .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
