Departing Munich we roll straight out of arena carpark onto the autobahn. 90 minutes later we drive into Memmingen and do a quick shop at the Lidl which is just around the corner from the stellplatz. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Memmingen<\/a> doesn\u2019t rate a mention in our guide book, but it has a very popular stellplatz. We arrive before mid-day and get the only spot available. Memmingen is only 50 kms from the Austrian Swiss border, so probably our last stop in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stellplatz stands on a kilometre long greenspace, with cycle paths and walking tracks. A stream meanders its way through it and continuing on into the village. A sign tells us it\u2019s 9 minutes to the altestadt (old town), the Germans like to be accurate. There\u2019s a hallenbad (swimming pool) just up the road, so Pam\u2019s looking forward to a swim. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once we\u2019ve settled we go for a walk up the path to get a feel for Memmingen. Pictured below an old city gate, some views of the city walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not surprisingly the walk into the altstadt only takes 9 minutes, following the stream and through the old gate and following the city walls. The altstadt is a lovely mixture of old but loved Bavarian houses and shops in contrasting pastels. Unfortunately the town hall and clock tower are scaffolded so I cannot show you more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next morning after a swim, we wander back into Memmingen to do some more exploring. Picture below, more city gates, obviously built in different styles in different centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When left unsupervised I get sight of something interesting. Pictured below from the GDR a Simson S 51, 250cc two stoke. Note the kick-start and gear change actuate through the same crankcase spindle. It\u2019s this level of advanced engineering that led to the collapse of the Berlin Wall. The later versions of the S 51 were labelled the Albatross, production finished in 1990.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We find this odd arrangement as where trying to find our way back to the Hymer after one of our walks. Pictured below a tiny cottage attached to the city walls and a tower ? Whoever they are they\u2019re good gardeners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We loved staying and exploring Memmingen. The payment machine at the stellplatz was on the blink, so our two days were free. The previous occupier of our spot left 5 kw of electricity credit, so that was free as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pam does her laps in the pool for the second day whilst I ready the Hymer for the road fill with fuel etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As our adventures in Germany draw to a close we head for the German\/Austrian\/Swiss border for our next adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
