Travelled: 120 kms from Coldstream to Carlisle   <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visited:  Coldstream and Carlisle  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stayed: Carlisle dedicated RV stop. \u00a33.80, N54.89710, W02.94380  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Budget: 14 days @ \u20ac98 per day<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We enjoyed a very quiet night in Coldstream<\/a>. It\u2019s on the Scottish side of the River Tweed, our little carpark seems only used by the dog walkers and perhaps the odd motorhome. Coldstream has historical significance as a favoured place for the English and Scottish to rattle their pikes and swords and kill each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Battle of Flodden occurred just on the English side of the Tweed here in 1513. It was the largest conflict ever between the two kingdoms, a terrible defeat for the Scotts who were never again a serious threat to the English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coldstream is the home of the King\u2019s Coldstream Guards part of the Household Calvary, they wear the large bearskin hats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next morning we take the Penitent\u2019s Walk which strangely enough starts 10 metres from our camper, if you walk far enough you find yourself on the Num\u2019s Walk although we didn\u2019t see any.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So Coldstream\u2019s done and we get another free stop, we fill with diesel on our way out of town and the kind lady at the servo lets us fill our water tank as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s 90 minutes to Carlisle. The A 698 follows the Tweed through the valley it\u2019s not a fast road. the Sunday traffic doesn\u2019t help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So we drive into Carlisle<\/a> and take the cheapest option, the Castle carpark. It\u2019s well located in central Carlisle and for \u00a33.80 per 24 hours almost as good as free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the fact we were parked less than 200 m from Carlisle Castle we decide not to pay for another castle. Must be a bit castled out. We planned a day in Carlisle on our way south in any case, but as we are meeting Pam\u2019s sister Jenny for dinner tonight we decide on a second day. Jenny and her travelling companion Margaret are doing the coast to coast walk in a few days our travels plans seem to collide in Carlisle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whilst at first glance you\u2019d think we were all too old for a pub crawl but that how it eventuated. It was an enjoyable catch up as we all chatted about our recent travels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We do enjoy our tour of the Cathedral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We do manage a couple of long walks. Despite walking 5 kms of the Hadrian\u2019s Wall walking path we never spotted anything that looked like a wall. Pam wandered the shops whilst I stood guard on the credit card. Anyway that was our visit to Carlisle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
