(Compliments Wikipedia)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n<p>In the early afternoon we enter the Bay of Islands. &nbsp;It&#8217;s lovely weather, the sea is calm and the sun is shining. &nbsp;It&#8217;s still cool but nearly everyone is on deck as the Vollendam cruises a course through and around several Islands in the bay. &nbsp;Some islands are apparently inhabited most are not, other than sea birds of course. &nbsp;We spot a pod of dolphin who following and lead the Vollendam across the bay.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_251\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-251\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC00625-e1402894838523.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-251 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC00625-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Bay of Island, NZ.  2009\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-251\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bay of Islands, NZ. 2009<\/figcaption><\/figure><br>\n<figure id=\"attachment_255\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-255\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC006401-e1402894926892.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-255 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC006401-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Not quite Leonardo and Kate, but where having fun all the same, NZ. 2009\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-255\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Not quite Leonardo and Kate, but where having fun all the same, NZ. 2009<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p>The Vollendam cruises through Auckland Harbour in the morning, docking before breakfast. &nbsp;As we proceed up the Harbour it&#8217;s similarity to Sydney is obvious to us. &nbsp;We plan a leisurely day wandering Auckland and maybe a little shopping.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_254\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-254\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC006351-e1402894586566.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-254 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC006351-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Auckland NZ.  2009\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-254\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Auckland NZ. 2009<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As usual we commenced our hunt for a decent coffee, something the Vollendam just doesn&#8217;t have at this stage. &nbsp;While the food and customer service provided by Holland America has proven first class, the american style brewed coffee just doesn&#8217;t do it for us. &nbsp;Anyway we find a coffee shop nearby to get our fix before spending the rest of the morning wandering, window shopping and getting the feel for the place.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_253\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-253\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC00634-e1402894669971.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-253 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC00634-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Auckland Harbour, NZ.  2009\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-253\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Auckland Harbour, NZ. 2009<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As afternoon descends we are back on board, the Vollendam has pushed away and turning to make its way out of the Harbour. &nbsp;We now look forward to two sea days as we head back to Sydney. &nbsp;From this our first cruise a couple of comments.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We found we enjoyed the small ports and towns more than the cities.<\/li>\n<li>New Zealander&#8217;s are very friendly and helpful.<\/li>\n<li>The Vollendam&#8217;s crew were so friendly and helpful.<\/li>\n<li>We spent less money than we planned, mind you we&#8217;re pretty careful.<\/li>\n<li>We like cruising !<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our next day is a sea day. &nbsp;After breakfast the Captain announces we will be approach White Island in the Bay of Plenty by mid-morning. &nbsp;White Island is NZ most active volcanic island.
