{"id":14458,"date":"2018-09-20T12:39:09","date_gmt":"2018-09-20T12:39:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=14458"},"modified":"2019-05-28T17:47:27","modified_gmt":"2019-05-28T07:47:27","slug":"grado-and-aquileia-italy-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=14458","title":{"rendered":"Grado and Aquileia, Italy 2018 \ud83c\uddee\ud83c\uddf9"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Date: &nbsp;19th September 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travelled: &nbsp;130 kms from Venice in Veneto to Grado in Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visited: &nbsp;Grado and Aquileia.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stayed: &nbsp;Grado, car-park \u20ac4, services at the adjoining sosta. &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/pjt1oJiHN1Yycr8h9\">N45.68204, E13.41220<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Budget: &nbsp;108 days @ \u20ac93 per day.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our visit to Venice complete, last night we discussed a chill out day to relax a little. &nbsp;So we set our sights on the sea-side town of Grado in the provence of Friuli Venezia Giulia, about a 100 klms east of Venice. &nbsp;I know your thinking, Friuli Venezia Giulia, who would give that name to a provence ? &nbsp;Doesn\u2019t roll off the tongue like New South Wales does it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After coffee and fruit we service the Hymer, Pam pays the proprietor and we make our way into the morning traffic again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Roads_Italy_A4E70.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We find ourselves on the A4-E10 for about 80 kms. This is apparently the motorway between Italy and Slovenia as well as connections to Hungary, Croatia and Serbia etc. &nbsp;The photo doesn\u2019t do it justice, literaly hundred of trucks nose to tail at 90 kph in both directions.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Grado_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Having stopped at the Lidl for a re-stock as we pass through Cervignano del Friuli, we &nbsp;then continue on to Grado and way up our overnight options.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a formal sosta with boom gates and all the services for \u20ac16 with 5-6 motorhomes in situ. &nbsp;Across the road but closer to the beach a large car-park with no services at \u20ac4 with 20-25 motorhomes, all Austrian or German lined up on either side. &nbsp;A little detective work reveals you can use the sosta service if you have a \u20ac4 parking ticket. &nbsp;The decision is an easy one. &nbsp;We settle in, roll the scooter off and wizz up to the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Grado_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>I can tell you are impressed by the beach at Grado. After two days of walking around Venice it looked alright. The sand is relatively clean, the water was reasonably clear. You not likely to catch a wave because there isn\u2019t any and getting wet takes some leg-work, some 500m out and it\u2019s waist deep.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Grado_3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>After a swim and relax for a couple of hours we head into Grado Centro for some exploring and a drink. &nbsp;Standing on one side of the Gulf of Trieste, it seems a yatchies haven.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Grado_5.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The town hall marks the start of the old town, which is really the church, some lovely old houses and some roman era ruins.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Grado_6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>Some street art&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Grado_7.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The Romanesque Basilica di Sant\u2019Eufemia, circa 15th century marks the centro of the old town.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Gardo_8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>It is something to behold inside.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Grado_9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>The mosaic floor dates back to an early church that stood on the site.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Grado_10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>We find some wonderful frescos around the walls as well.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Grado_11.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Near the Basilica the ruin of another church the Basilica Battistero in Corte and some Roman era ruins have been preserved. &nbsp;Circa 500AD. &nbsp;Discovered in 1904 during some local excavations.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Grado_15.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Our evening mellows in a little bar not far from the scooter (luckily enough). Pam tries her first Negroni, likes it so much, she has a second. So we thought we would come back for a look.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Aquileia_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>So we stop at the tourist office get a map and go for a wander. An earthquake in 1348 leveled the original church.
