Travelled:  95 kilometres from Modena to Ferrara, both in Emilia-Romagna, Italy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visited:  Ferrara.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stayed:  Ferrara, free car-park, adjoining a sosta with services.  N44.83486, E11.60952<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Budget:  104 days @ \u20ac93 per day.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our car-park in Modena provided a quiet evening.  Mind you a police car with three police officers arrived whilst we were having coffee, having a long discussion with one of a neighbors.  Glad they didn\u2019t come last night we may not have felt quite as comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We set the GPS for Ferrara and take to the motorway once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have I mentioned Italy\u2019s tollpay system, more about fatigue management than efficiency.  Boom gates and tickets, it not uncommon to wait 15 minutes or more even in light traffic.  It\u2019s very slow, so you can have a short nap, Pam can go to the bathroom.  Even the tollpass system (the blue lane) has gates and queues.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

There is a proper sosta here in Ferrara (\u20ac10pn), but we couldn\u2019t get the machine to accept our payment, so we parked in the free car-park next door.  As usual there are maybe 20 motorhomes in there but 7-8 appeared to be just stored there.  Nothing is an easy walk from here, so we roll the Kisbee of the rack, taking the easy option.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Italian\u2019s love a festival and this weekend is the hot-air balloon festival in Ferrara. It doesn\u2019t have the pius feel of carrying a statue of a saint down the street, but the kids were all enjoying it.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Bit creepy this balloon…always staring at me.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

So we scooter about looking for the Palazzo Del Diamanti.  After some confusing and a referral to Google Maps we find we are not lost, this is it. A masterpiece of late renaissance design.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Built in the 15th century.  Each exposed stone block having a 4 sided point.  There are literally thousands of them surrounding all four sides, all geometrically perfect to my eye,<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Castello Estense is just a kilometre away in the heart of the historic centro.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

This mass of red bricks and moat was built for Nicolo Il d\u2019Este the local Baron in 1385.  According to the blurb, mostly to protect him and his family from the townsfolk of Ferrara.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Another wedding, no it\u2019s not the father giving away his daughter.  The groom has a fleet of Ferrari wedding cars, so the bride is truely in love !<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The other side of the castello.  Much of the castle is apparently used as government office space, but the original royal suites are now a museum.  At \u20ac8pp we opted for just looking at the outside.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

On the Piazza del Castello, this statue was a bit scary.  Looked like he was whipping up some damnation for someone.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Piazza Cattedrale.  Opposite the Duomo as you would expect.  The Duomo is wrapped in netting in the midst of a \u20ac6m revovation.  So no point taking a picture of that.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

As Mass was being conducted we just have a quick look.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

We spotted a chinese restuarant as we came into Ferrara earlier today, but we scooter about in vain trying to find it.  So we eat in again and have a drink and chat about our day as the day slides by…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
