{"id":14269,"date":"2018-09-15T07:45:16","date_gmt":"2018-09-15T07:45:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=14269"},"modified":"2019-05-28T16:46:44","modified_gmt":"2019-05-28T06:46:44","slug":"modena-italy-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=14269","title":{"rendered":"Modena, Italy 2018 \ud83c\uddee\ud83c\uddf9"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Date: &nbsp;14th September 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travelled: &nbsp;230 kilometres from Lucca in Tuscany to Modena in Emilia-Romagna, Italy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visited: &nbsp;Maranello-The Galleria Ferrari, \u20ac14pp and Modena.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stayed: &nbsp;Modena, free car-park, no services.  <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/urvB82jgVA6STV6Z8\">N44.65332, E10.91004<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Budget: &nbsp;103 days @ \u20ac93 per day.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After our big couple of days in Lucca it was time to move on. &nbsp;We have our usual coffee and fruit, then start to get ready to go. &nbsp;It takes a little time to service the motorhome and extract ourselves from this little sosta. &nbsp;Now full of motorhomes and cars as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We need to keep moving, we return to Australia in a month. &nbsp;Our loose plan is to complete as much of our tour of Italy as possible before we need to make for England. &nbsp;So another day on the motorway. &nbsp;We depart Lucca and farewell Tuscany, setting the GPS for a stop in Maranello.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Modena and nearby Maranello are the exotic car centres of Italy. &nbsp;The Ferrari factory, museum and GP test track are in Maranello, the Lamborghini factory and museum are just up the road in Modena. &nbsp;There is a small sosta in Maranello, but it\u2019s not within walking distance of the Ferrari museum, so we just stop under a tree, having a late lunch in the shade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Maranello_4.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>There are 3-4 of the current Ferrari line up as well as several formula 1, ex-factory open wheelers.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wpps_container\" style=\"margin: 10px auto; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>So that\u2019s it, we have done the Ferrari Galleria. &nbsp;You can book weeks in advance and do the factory tour or perhaps spend a few hundred euros on driving a Ferrari on the test track for 15 minutes, but my days as a petrol head are long past. &nbsp;I would rather look at motorhomes or motorbikes these days. &nbsp;So we make for Modena, the only stop a large free car-park but it\u2019s close to the historic centro, so we find ourselves a spot amongst 5-6 other motorhomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Modena_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>On a corner as we walk up to town, this old training aircraft on display as a memorial. &nbsp;We later discover there are several military bases around Modena and a large military university as well.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Modena_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Once a military armory this grand building is now the palazzo dei Musei, Modena\u2019s museum complex. &nbsp;We didn\u2019t need a museum today but they kindly gave us a map and a few pointers. &nbsp;Apparently this weekend is the Modena Philosophy Festival.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Modena_4.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Finally in the centro. &nbsp;It\u2019s not particularly flash, but it\u2019s neat and tidy. &nbsp;The Police have road blocked the main entries, so it\u2019s easy to walk around.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Modena_6.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Dedicated to St Geminianus, Modena\u2019s Duomo.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Modena_7.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Most of the interior of the cathedral is under renovation. &nbsp;Mass was just concluding in this small chapel below the main church, so we waited a few minutes for it to clear, before taking this photo.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Modena_8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"825\" height=\"1100\"\/><figcaption>Adjoining the Duomo, the Tower Ghirlandina. &nbsp;The lower section dates to the 11th century, the spire was added in the 13th century.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Modena_8-1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The good news story of the day&#8230;free entry to the tower during the philosophy festival saving us \u20ac2pp. &nbsp;There\u2019s a nice view from up here.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Modena_9.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Your thinking, who is going to show for a philosophy festival. &nbsp;Well all these people did, it\u2019s a full house today.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s mid-day by the time we return to the car-park, have another coffee and make for the road again. &nbsp;The GPS set for Ferrara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael and Pam<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"bpp_credits\" style=\"clear: both;
