{"id":13271,"date":"2018-08-21T17:40:54","date_gmt":"2018-08-21T17:40:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=13271"},"modified":"2019-05-28T06:48:57","modified_gmt":"2019-05-27T20:48:57","slug":"grottaglie-italy-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=13271","title":{"rendered":"Grottaglie, Italy 2018 \ud83c\uddee\ud83c\uddf9"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Date: &nbsp;20th August 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travelled: &nbsp;211 kilometres from Morano Calabro to Grottaglie, both in Italy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visited: &nbsp;Morano Calabro in Calabria.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stayed: &nbsp;Grottaglie, Parcheggio, free no services. &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/LxjpiWXuPZZrAXn46\">N40.53275, E17.42717<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from the circling thunder storm and some rain we enjoyed our evening in Morano Calabro. &nbsp;There was one motorhome beside us when we went to bed and two when we awoke. &nbsp;Not very Italian of them to park beside us and not make a racket. &nbsp;Today is a driving day, but we may as well have a look at Morano Calabro as we are here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Morano_Calabro_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We walk across the park, behind the sosta to find the Church of St Maddalena. &nbsp;It\u2019s all locked up. So we continue on.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Morano_Calabro_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">It doesn\u2019t take long to work out everything in&nbsp;<span style=\"font-family: Helvetica;\">Morano Calabro is either up hill or down. &nbsp;By up or down I mean steps.<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Morano_Calabro_6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>More steps&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Morano_Calabro_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>Finally as we near the top of the town we find the Church Dell\u2019Annunziata. It\u2019s open so we pop in for a look.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Morano_Calabro_6-1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The church has been beautifully maintained, we note the lovely flowers and presume there may have been a wedding or baptism yesterday.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Morano_Calabro_7.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Behind the church and another 20 steps we finally make the Castello Normanno. &nbsp;Originally a Roman outpost, the town was founded in the 2nd century BC. &nbsp;The castello reached it peak in the mid 15th century, before slowly going into decline.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Morano_Calabro_9.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The castello provides some wonderful views across the old town&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Morano_Calabro_10.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>&#8230;and the valley below.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Morano_Calabro_11.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The castello also provides some shade, half comfortable chairs and some breeze.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Morano_Calabro_14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>We make our way back down through town to the Hymer.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We have some breakfast and ready the Hymer for departure. &nbsp;Making our way down the hill, we turn back onto the freeway for 20 kilometres before turning for the SS 106, the coast road circling the Gulf of Taranto. &nbsp;The instep of the boot of Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/SS106.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>An old fire tender makes its way to a grass fire further up the road. Has a bit of a lean as you can see, so left hand turns would be risky.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The hours slip by as does the province of Basilicata and we enter the province of Puglia. &nbsp;We stop for a late lunch on the waterfront in Taranto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Grottaglie_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Finally we arrive in Grottaglie, it\u2019s slightly out of our way, but the parking is free here. The parking attendant points to the corner. (This photo was taken the next morning.)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Grottaglie_3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Once the sun has set we take a walk to stretch our legs.
