{"id":13174,"date":"2018-08-19T06:01:00","date_gmt":"2018-08-19T06:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=13174"},"modified":"2019-05-28T06:44:01","modified_gmt":"2019-05-27T20:44:01","slug":"stilo-italy-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=13174","title":{"rendered":"Stilo, Italy 2018 \ud83c\uddee\ud83c\uddf9"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Date: &nbsp;18th August 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travelled: &nbsp;190 kilometres from Gerace to Santa Severina, both in Italy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visited: &nbsp;Stilo in Calabria.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stayed: &nbsp;Santa Severina, Agriturismo Armiro, \u20ac10 with electricity and water. &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/3ja2KhB5ETSScpVK8\">N39.16713, E16.88756<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another very quiet evening, this time in the huge sosta in Gerace. &nbsp;We expected other motorhomes to arrive and keep us company, but no. &nbsp;We also expected to pay, but no we didn\u2019t. &nbsp;One comment written in the data-base stated this sosta was built on an EU grant. &nbsp;It appears money well spent, so we say thanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have our coffee and fruit, before packing and servicing the Hymer. &nbsp;We want to get some kilometres done today, but there is another interesting mountain town called Stilo about 50 kilometres north so we have a look at that first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Stillo_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The SS110 follows a dry river bed from the sea into the hills and eventually Stilo. &nbsp;We find it difficult to see the town until actually drive into it. &nbsp;We park at a small layby and have a coffee. &nbsp;This amazing chapel and gate just below.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Stilo_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>Our next find is this memorial to the fallen.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Stilo_4.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We\u2019re not sure what this is, but it has that EU grant look about it.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Stilo_7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>We start our walk up the hill (it\u2019s always up hill) and spot this ceramic.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Stilo_8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>We soon notice the difference between Gerace (last post) and Stilo. Stilo is more laid back, less tourism focus.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Stilo_8-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>We find a church on our walk, it\u2019s not open unfortunately. However if you look to the left of the photo you will see a sculptured foot set into the wall ?<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Stilo_9.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>On the hill above us we can see this chapel, but we have no way to get there as we left our rope and climbing gear behind this morning.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Stilo_9-1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We see a sign to the Laura Madonna and follow a path around the ridge.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Stilo_10.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Pam likes to give the safety rails a good shake every now and then to make sure they comply with the relevant building code.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Stilo_10-1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>10 minutes later we find this little grotto excavated into the hillside.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Stilo_11.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Finally we make the top of the hill and the old Duomo, the sign dates it at circa 1538. Unfortunately it was closed.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Stilo_12.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>So we wander back to the town main piazza almost where we started our walk 90 minutes ago. &nbsp;The piazza is dominated by the Church of Sant Francesco d\u2019Assisi.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Still_18.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>You do get some views across town and valley beyond.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Stilo_14.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Inside the church, it\u2019s all very traditional. It\u2019s festival time here in Italy and this fellow has been prepared for his annual walk through town.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Stilo_19.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>Not sure who she is&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Sellia_Marina_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Back in the Hymer we make our way back down to the coast, continuing north along the SS106. We stop at Sellia Marina for lunch and a swim. &nbsp;It was nicer than this photo indicates.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Santa_Severina_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Another hour north along the coast we turn inland for Santa Severina. It\u2019s a slow drive along country road but we eventually get a look at tomorrow adventure.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Santa_Severina_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The data-base shows a farm stay (agriturismo) 5 klms out of Santa Severina. So we arrive get told where to park and settle in. &nbsp;It\u2019s a lovely place with great views.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Santa_Severina_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>The family run a restaurant from the house. No menu, just whatever is fresh from the farm, and she fancies cooking. We enjoyed a fabulous meal of traditional Calabrian fare. There are at least 40 people so the place is popular.
