{"id":13130,"date":"2018-08-18T10:09:21","date_gmt":"2018-08-18T10:09:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=13130"},"modified":"2019-05-28T06:42:20","modified_gmt":"2019-05-27T20:42:20","slug":"gerace-italy-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=13130","title":{"rendered":"Gerace, Italy 2018 \ud83c\uddee\ud83c\uddf9"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Date: &nbsp;17th August 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travelled: &nbsp;70 kilometres from Scilla to Gerace, both in Italy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visited: &nbsp;Gerace in Calabria.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stayed: &nbsp;Gerace Parcheggio Sosta, seems free with electricity and water. &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/RYwNLT6dTRoU7Y2GA\">N38.26581, E16.22081<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the sosta was jammed packed with Italians in motorhomes it was a very quiet night. &nbsp;The sosta attendant certainly gave me a wide berth after last evenings discussion. &nbsp;The view along the Costa Viola is just as beautiful in the morning light. &nbsp;We considered getting the scooter off and going into Scilla for a swim, but we decide to pack up and move on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have our coffee and fruit watching people trying to extricate their motorhomes from the sosta and depart wherever. &nbsp;Eventually after 4-5 have left the time is right and we can swing around, so we take the opportunity to escape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Scilla_101.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Camper chaos Italian style.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Our goal for today is Gerace, on our list of 100 beautiful Italian villages and rates a column in the Lonely Planet as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Scalli_101.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We make our way through Scilla and continue north<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Goroblo_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Nice to be on the road again.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Goroblo_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>The picture tells the story.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Taurianova_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Penthouse for sale ?<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Gerace_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The SS111 across the mountains from Taurianova to Gerace is a tree lined boulevard for some 20 klms. &nbsp;Not always this pretty but cool and green all the same.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Gerace_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Finally in Gerace. We drive down to the sosta, about 1.5 klms from the old town centro, but mostly uphill, so it\u2019s not handy. &nbsp;That\u2019s Gerace on the hill behind the Hymer. &nbsp;The sosta is huge, electricity and water for 20 motorhomes and parking for another 20. &nbsp;But it\u2019s just us for now.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Gerace_3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Looking up at Gerace from the sosta. It seems the Italians love to throw some concrete around. Mind you, with the geological risk of earthquake, it\u2019s not a surprise.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Gerace_6.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>I roll the scooter off the rack and we ride up the hill to the top car-park. The view amazing ! &nbsp;There is actually a guy in uniform directing and charging to park. However scooters are free, I can see his disappointment.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Gerace_7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>Just across from the car-park the ruins of the citadel look worth an investigation but the gate is locked and the usual no entry sign warns us away.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Gerace_7-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>Walking down the hill, we find the Gerace\u2019s Meridian Gate, circa 1624. &nbsp;The wall of the cathedral on the right.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Gerace_20.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The Cathedral of Gerace, the largest in Calabria. It dates back to 1024, but there are more surprises as we enter this lower doorway. &nbsp;At this level you walk straight into the crypt.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Gerace_21.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The cathedral was built over an existing Byzentine church. &nbsp;That church is now the cathedral crypt. &nbsp;Looking into the original 7th century altar.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Gerace_22.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We notice the cathedral has a spare parts department.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Gerace_23.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>The cathedral altar is simple, consistent with the rest of the adornments.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Gerace_24.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Attached to the cathedral there is a small museum in what was, the diocese suite of rooms.
