{"id":12931,"date":"2018-08-12T14:48:56","date_gmt":"2018-08-12T14:48:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=12931"},"modified":"2019-05-28T06:28:11","modified_gmt":"2019-05-27T20:28:11","slug":"rabat-malta-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=12931","title":{"rendered":"Rabat, Malta 2018 \ud83c\uddf2\ud83c\uddf9"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Date: &nbsp;11th August &nbsp;2018<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travelled: &nbsp;Only by scooter, the Hymer is on ramps and hooked up to electricity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visited:&nbsp;The catacombs and grottos of Rabat.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stayed: &nbsp;Camping Malta, L-Armier, \u20ac21.50 pd, all the usual services. &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/56ZFQpNv1kL7wgMT9\">N35.99484, E14,36686<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Budget: 69 days @ \u20ac100 per day<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We spent last night chatting to Josh and Mickayla from beautiful Foster in NSW. &nbsp;They purchased their Hymer from a buy-back dealer in Amsterdam for \u20ac7500. &nbsp;They have done a lot of travelling in the last 3 months and lots of stories to share. &nbsp;Josh has Maltese heritage and stayed here at Camping Malta with his family some 20 years ago. &nbsp;We cook them dinner, drink too much and have a nice evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But today\u2019s another day. Our time in Malta is running short, so we best make the most of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scooter ride to Rabat is less than 10 klms from L-Armier. &nbsp;As we know the way to Mdina and Rabat is just down the hill. &nbsp;The Lonely Planet lists all sorts of interesting stops, so we are off&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Rabat_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We find a parking spot just a block from St Paul\u2019s Church (circa 1675) in Rabat. Let\u2019s not be confused with St Paul\u2019s Cathedral in Mdina just a kilometre away.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Rabat_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We pay our \u20ac5pp and wander the grotto, catacombs and shelters.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Rabat_3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Legend has it that St Paul preached in this Grotto (circa 60AD), as he made his pilgrimage through Malta.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Rabat_5.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>This statue of St Paul was gifted by the Templar Knights in 1748. &nbsp;The faded murals add mystery to the grotto.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Rabat_6.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Below the Grotto we visit the WW11 air-raid shelters. &nbsp;Its much cooler down there.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Rabat_8.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We walk upstairs to the adjoining Wignacourt Museum. &nbsp;It has an extensive collection but no air-conditioning. &nbsp;Its very difficult to really take our time and enjoy in the stifling heat.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Rabat_9.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>From the church we walk another 200 metres to the catacombs and another \u20ac5 pp.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Rabat_10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>We found this museum less than impressive. &nbsp;Other than long walkways over numerour holes cut into rock, there is this one point of interest. &nbsp;Which on closer inspection replicates what may have been.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Rabat_11.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>What we did find amazing and well worth our \u20ac5 pp was St. Agatha\u2019s Catacombs.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Rabat_12.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>No photos are allowed, but I manage a couple while our young and very knowledgeable guide goes through St Agatha\u2019s life toward martyrdom. &nbsp;A sad story of cruelty and defiance. &nbsp;I\u2019ll try to find a link.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Rabat_15.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>It\u2019s all the real thing at St Agatha\u2019s, two out of every three niche we pass is still occupied.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s another hot afternoon in Malta, we stop for a late lunch and a drink in a little cafe just across the road from our starting point in Rabat. &nbsp;Then head back to L-Armier on the scooter for a late afternoon swim at our little cove adjacent to the campsite. &nbsp;As the sunsets we tidy up and get ready for a 4.30am departure for the ferry back in Valletta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael and Pam<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"bpp_credits\" style=\"clear: both;
