{"id":12552,"date":"2018-08-03T16:00:10","date_gmt":"2018-08-03T16:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=12552"},"modified":"2019-05-27T16:50:46","modified_gmt":"2019-05-27T06:50:46","slug":"pozzallo-sicily-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=12552","title":{"rendered":"Pozzallo, Sicily 2018 \ud83c\uddee\ud83c\uddf9"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong> Date: &nbsp;2nd August 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travelled: 146 kilometres from Piazza Armerina to Pozzallo, both in Sicily.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visited: &nbsp;Driving the Baroque Towns (Lonely Planet, Italy)&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stayed: &nbsp;Area Ittioturismo, Pozzallo, \u20ac25 all the usual services. &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/F1nFzUpHVVYWkpNz6\">N36.71541, E14.82240<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our stop just down the hill from Piazza Armerina was a good one, mind you the road was a pot holed mess the Hymer did not enjoy. &nbsp;Once the storm pasted we found a shady spot under a tree, had a drink and relaxed. &nbsp;We were soon joined by 3 other motorhomes and the evening passed very quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Piazza_Armerina_10.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Just a quick photo as we prepare to depart the sosta. &nbsp;Pam has a new friend.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Area Ittioturismo Sosta is a part hotel, part B&amp;B and sosta. &nbsp;Beautifully maintained with a large pool, but the road is a shocker. &nbsp;I ask the proprieters son if there is another, better road out, but he tells me we came in on the good road. &nbsp;We recommend arrival and departure by helicopter. &nbsp;Anyway we had a good night and \u20ac15 is reasonable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We plan to be in Pozzallo tonight. &nbsp;The Lonely Planet recommends a driving tour of what it descibes as the \u2018Baroque Towns\u2019. &nbsp;So from &nbsp;Piazza Armerina we find the SS117 we turn for the hills and valleys of south central Sicily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Sicily_Road_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Sicily is not mountainous, but it\u2019s very hilly. &nbsp;The SS roads (A roads) in Sicily are generally very good. Lots of long high bridges level the road out.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Sicily_Roads_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Mind you&#8230;you still need to expect the unexpected.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Chiaramonte_Gulfi_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>90 minutes later we start the climb up to Chiaramonte Gulfi.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Chiaramonte_Gulfi_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>It\u2019s a long steep climb, but now we are here the next challenge is parking.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Chiaramonte_Gulfi_4.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>This is my new norm ! You expect narrow streets in Italian villages, but the double parked cars make it very hard.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Double parking is an Italian art form. &nbsp;Generally the centre of villages have paid parking and parking police are everywhere. &nbsp;However they walk the street checking the times on parking tickets and write out infringements, but they seemingly ignore double parked cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Chiaramonte_Gulfi_6.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Just out of the paid parking zone we find a safe spot and head into the centre of the village to do some exploring.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Chiaramonte_Gulfi_7.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Reading the sign, it appears the water truck comes here twice a day for an hour allowing locals access to drinking water ?<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Chiaramonte_Gulfi_8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"825\" height=\"1100\"\/><figcaption>Finally down in the square we find the Duomo St Mary.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Chiaramonte_Gulfi_9.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>A quick look inside the Duomo, very nice.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Chiaramonte_Gulfi_10.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Across the piazza the memorial to the fallen, very stylised.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Chiaramonte_Gulfi_14.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Must be close to festival time.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Chiaramonte_Gulfi_11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>After wandering the laneways for a while, we catch a glimpse of a church higher up the hill.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Chiaramonte_Gulfi_13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>After a long walk up we find the Church of St Giovanni. &nbsp;The view from up here is panoramic but the heat haze makes a half decent photo impossible.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>So we head back to the Hymer after finding a bakery and butcher and make for our next stop, Ragusa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Chiaramonte_Gulfi_16.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>As we continue up the hill out of Chiaramonte Gulfi, one corner provides a stopping spot with great view back at the town.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Ragusa_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Ragusa is one of Sicily\u2019s nine provincial capitals, something that we were blissfully unaware off. It has grown down either side of a steep gorge. The old town on the right, the less attractive new town on the left. As you can see they are linked by a series of bridges.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Ragusa_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We find a parking spot on one of the bridges, no blue machines here but a pink Pam.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Ragusa_4.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>So we start walking for the old town. Obviously you can see the Duomo tower in the centre of the picture.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Ragusa_5.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Looking across the Piazza Duomo towards the Cathedral of St John the Baptist, which was closed. Mind you, so was everything else. &nbsp;As we explore only a couple of bars are open, everyone has gone home for lunch and a nap.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Ragusa_7.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>A tourist (we consider ourselves travellers rather than tourists) asked us to take her photo in the Duomo gardens. So we asked her to do the same.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Ragusa_9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>A lot of non-Hymer friendly laneways.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Ragusa_9-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>There are some beautiful laneways as well, its a very clean and tidy town.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Ragusa_10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>Having enjoyed walking about Ragusa for an hour, we slowly make our way back to the Hymer. It\u2019s mid afternoon as we depart&nbsp;<span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Helvetica;\">Ragusa, <\/span>spotting a Lidl supermarket as we do and stop for a quick shop.
