{"id":12508,"date":"2018-08-02T05:32:23","date_gmt":"2018-08-02T05:32:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=12508"},"modified":"2019-05-27T16:48:31","modified_gmt":"2019-05-27T06:48:31","slug":"piazza-armerina-sicily-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=12508","title":{"rendered":"Piazza Armerina, Sicily 2018 \ud83c\uddeb\ud83c\uddf7"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Date: &nbsp;1st August 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travelled: &nbsp;132 kilometres from Agrigento to Piazza Armerina, both in Sicily<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visited: Villa Romano del Casale, \u20ac10pp + \u20ac3 parking.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stayed: Area Agriturismo, Piazza Amerina. \u20ac15 all the usual. &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/iqcfJS31ZhPUNq6b9\">N37.34021 E14.38851<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s always a bit more time consuming to pack up after a couple of days in situ. &nbsp;Chairs, tables etc, then the cloths line and awning not to mention the scooter. &nbsp;By the time the Hymer\u2019s ready to roll, I am so hot and sweaty, I have my second shower of the day and its only 8.30 in the morning. &nbsp;So we drive around Agrigento and turn for the SS640.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no breeze this morning, the sea is dead flat and you can almost see the humidity. &nbsp;The best thing about moving on is we get a breeze as we travel. &nbsp;We don\u2019t normally travel with the Hymer\u2019s cab air-conditioning running, but its so humid here. &nbsp;Our first afternoon in Sicily as we departed Palermo we turned on the A\/C and found it was obviously not working properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We stop for fuel at Caltanissetta, I ask the attendant about air-conditioning repairs. &nbsp;Lots of waiving hands, gesturing left and right he tries his best. &nbsp;10 minutes later the bonnet is up and the young mechanic connects our air-condioning system up to a very fancy machine. &nbsp;It runs through all the tests, then our system is re-gassed and we are on our way, less \u20ac80. &nbsp;Going on to the Lidl still in Caltanissetta we do a stock up before continuing on to Piazza Armerina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The ruins of Villa Romano del Casale are 5 klms this side of Armerina, so we turn for there first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Ville_Romana_del_Casale_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We are getting a little bit ruined out, so we are hoping for something a little different today.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Villa_Romana_del_Casale_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The villa was thought to be the hunting lodge of Emperor Marcus Aurelius Maximanus (think Gladiator). Circa 3rd century.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Villa_Romana_del_Casale_3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The complex was thought destroyed after a flood during the 12th century, it remained buried in mud for 700 years, being re-discovered in the 1950\u2019s. &nbsp;A bit like myself.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Villa_Romana_del_Casale_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>It many ways, more like a palace than a hunting lodge. It just goes on and on.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Villa_Romana_del_Casale_6.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Apparently there are 3500 m<span style=\"-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; caret-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.870588); color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.870588); font-family: Roboto, HelveticaNeue, Arial, sans-serif; text-align: left; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); background-color: #ffffff;\">\u00b2<\/span>&nbsp;of mosaic flooring.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Villa_Romana_del_Casale_6-1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>This is \u2018the room of the ten girls in bikinis\u2019, quite famous amongst us archeological types. It\u2019s one thing to look at temple that has stood in the weather, surviving wars and earthquakes for 2500 years, but our tour of the Villa is about observing the skill of the artist and tradesman who created an image of life some 18 centuries ago. &nbsp;At least as an emporer wanted it to be depicted.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Piazza_Armerina_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We grudgingly pay the parking fee and leave the wonderful mosaic\u2019s of the Villa Romana del Casale behind. &nbsp;Climbing the hill toward Piazza Armerina, a storm is brewing.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Piazza_Armerina_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Piazza Armerina looks very pretty, but at 2pm its more like a ghost town.
