{"id":11987,"date":"2018-07-21T15:08:00","date_gmt":"2018-07-21T15:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=11987"},"modified":"2019-05-27T08:00:08","modified_gmt":"2019-05-26T22:00:08","slug":"col-dizoard-france-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=11987","title":{"rendered":"Col d\u2019Izoard, France 2018 \ud83c\uddeb\ud83c\uddf7"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Date: &nbsp;20th July 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travelled: &nbsp;24 kilometres from Brian\u00e7on to Col d\u2019Izoard, both in France.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visited: &nbsp;Brian\u00e7on<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stayed: &nbsp;Col d\u2019Izoard car park, free. &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/ugcixATDRJf6qJVc6\">N44.81903, E06.73548<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our night in the aire at Brian\u00e7on was quiet. &nbsp;Surrounded by a 10-12 other motorhomes it felt safe enough. &nbsp;We knew very little about Brian\u00e7on until we drove in late yesterday afternoon seeing a fortresses on the surrounding hillsides. &nbsp;Brian\u00e7on is arguably europe\u2019s highest towns at 1350 metres asl. &nbsp;Which is good for sleeping, as it cools quickly as the sun sets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The old city of Brian\u00e7on (Ville Haute) stands high on the hill above our overnight aire but it doesn\u2019t appear to be that motorhome friendly. &nbsp;So I roll the scooter off the rack and I take it for a spin into the tourist office to look at our options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Brian\u00e7on_5.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The young lady in the tourist office advices parking in the Champ de Mars carpark above Ville Haute, it\u2019s expensive for a motorhome but free for scooters. &nbsp;Our little scooter gets us up the steep hill safely. &nbsp;Pam loves the big bike.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Brian\u00e7on_6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>We find the gateway to Ville Haute easily enough and start exploring. The fortress and the layout of the town was designed by Louis 14th\u2019s chief marshall and designer, Vauban. &nbsp;Given he designed and built 32 others across france he was a busy fellow.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Brian\u00e7on_7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>We start by walking down the Grande Rue (main street). &nbsp;Love this spoon channel that runs the length of the street. &nbsp;Later we see several people get a wet foot.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Brian\u00e7on_6-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>Off the Grande Rue there are a labyrinth of narrow laneways.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Brian\u00e7on_8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>We find the Coll\u00e8giale Notra Dame St.Nicholas. The small square outside doesn\u2019t allow me to get a good photo, but it has a sturdy look. &nbsp;Not surprising as it was designed and built by Varban in 1703, the same fellow who designed the neighbouring fortresses.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Brian\u00e7on_20.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Inside the Coll\u00e8giale, looking forward to the altar. &nbsp;The coloured plaster in pale green and mauve are an unusual combination.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Brian\u00e7on_10.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>I turn my back for a moment and Pam has found another soap shop.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Brian\u00e7on_12.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Following the little green line in the tourist map we find ourselves at the fortress or citadel or Fort de Ch\u00e0teau (depending on the map or sign) which overlooks Ville Haute and the rest of&nbsp;<span style=\"text-align: start; background-color: #ffffff;\">Brian\u00e7on for that matter.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Brian\u00e7on_13.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>So we pay the princely some of \u20ac6 pp to enter the citadel and walk the ruins. &nbsp;By now it\u2019s getting hot and there is little shade except for the odd passageway or staircase.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Brian\u00e7on_15.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The view from the high casement reminds us of how many steps we have done this morning.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Brian\u00e7on_17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>This unusual bronze was added to the casement in 1920. &nbsp;As I cannot fly, you can only see it from behind.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Brian\u00e7on_18.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>So we continue to follow the green line on the map and say goodbye to Ville Haute and&nbsp;<span style=\"text-align: start; background-color: #ffffff;\">Brian\u00e7on. &nbsp;Fountaine Persens and its little garden make a lovely last photo.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Brian\u00e7on_19.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We find a Carrefore supermarket, stock up with some provisions and fuel before turning on the D902 and the Route de Grandes Alps again.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Col_dIzoard_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>So we start the long grind back up the next mountain pass.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Col_dIzoard_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>It\u2019s only 20 kilometres to Col d\u2019Izoard but it takes us an hour to reach the top.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wpps_container\" style=\"margin: 10px auto;
