{"id":11581,"date":"2018-07-06T03:41:13","date_gmt":"2018-07-06T03:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=11581"},"modified":"2019-05-26T08:08:44","modified_gmt":"2019-05-25T22:08:44","slug":"edinburgh-day-2-scotland-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=11581","title":{"rendered":"Edinburgh (day 2), Scotland 2018 \ud83c\udff4\udb40\udc67\udb40\udc62\udb40\udc73\udb40\udc63\udb40\udc74\udb40\udc7f"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Date: &nbsp;5th July 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travelled: &nbsp;87 kilometres from Newcraighall (Edinburgh) to Jedburgh, both in Scotland.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visited: &nbsp;Edinburgh (by rail) and Dryburgh Abbey<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stayed: &nbsp;Jedburgh, car-park adjacent tourist office, free + toilet. &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/GeYHNfkCvRkhgVUQ7\">N55.47707, W02.55305<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have another quiet evening in the car-park at Newcraighall although I did hear some load music at some stage during the night. &nbsp;After yesterday\u2019s big day in Edinburgh, we are planning an easier second day .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we walk across the car-park to the station, we note another couple of motorhomes have arrived. &nbsp;The train arrives and we are soon at Edinburgh\/Waverley railway station. &nbsp;Our first stop today is the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Royal families official residence in Scotland. &nbsp;It\u2019s at the far end of the Royal Mile, so we walk, to find a #6 bus to Holyrood. &nbsp;\u00a31.40pp later we are dropped of outside Holyroodhouse only to find ourselves surrounded by police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Holyrood_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>This is as close to the Palace of Holyroodhouse as we will get today. &nbsp;The Queen is in residence this week and it\u2019s closed to the public. &nbsp;Mind you there is a garden party for the Duke of Edinburgh Award this morning, but our invites must be in the mail.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Holyrood_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Our friends Joe and Ian were at another gate about this time and captured this picture of the Black Watch during a practice run.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems our loose planning strategy has let us down on this occasion. &nbsp;We don\u2019t search every attractions website as we travel, just rely on our guide books in general. &nbsp;Anyway the Queen\u2019s visit has saved us \u00a312pp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just across the way stands Arthur\u2019s Seat the hill that overlooks Edinburgh, so we head off to walk it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Arthur_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>As we start walking up Arthur\u2019s Seat we can see the morning tea underway in the palace.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Arthur_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>A little higher up, that\u2019s Beacon Hill, with it\u2019s tower and its imitation greek ruin.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Arthur_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>Pam hits her stride nicely here, but it gets a lot steeper. As we walk back to the bus stop we are stopped by a policeman, two motorcycles escorting Range Rover swing around the drive. \u2018That\u2019s the Queen\u2019 says the young policeman. &nbsp;\u2018She doesn\u2019t always wave you know\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We take the bus, then train back to Newcraighall a couple of hours earlier than planned, but that\u2019s OK. &nbsp;We get the Hymer ready to go, before driving up to the Tesco for a shop, fuel the Hymer and start the drive south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Dryburgh_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>Heading south we have one place on our hit list of places to visit, Dryburgh Abbey.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Dryburgh_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Said to be one of the most evocative and romantic ruins in Scotland. &nbsp;Dryburgh Abbey lives up to it\u2019s reputation. &nbsp;Added to that, a wedding has just been held and a piper is wandering the ground playing during our visit.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Dryburgh_2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>You can read about it here.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Dryburgh_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>Pam sits and enjoys the sound of the bagpipes echoing through the ruins.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dryburgh Abbey.\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Uw5-v2FH0YU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Dryburgh_7.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Douglas Haig (not one of my favourites) and the writer and poet Sir Walter Scott are buried here.
