{"id":11374,"date":"2018-07-02T13:09:46","date_gmt":"2018-07-02T13:09:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=11374"},"modified":"2019-05-26T07:49:02","modified_gmt":"2019-05-25T21:49:02","slug":"driving-the-cairngorm-scotland-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=11374","title":{"rendered":"Driving the Cairngorms, Scotland 2018 \ud83c\udff4\udb40\udc67\udb40\udc62\udb40\udc73\udb40\udc63\udb40\udc74\udb40\udc7f"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Date: &nbsp;1st July 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travelled: &nbsp;179 kilometres from Grantown-on-Spey to Perth, both in Scotland<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visited: &nbsp;Mostly just driving the Cairngorms National Park and Balmoral Castle \u00a39.50pp<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stayed: &nbsp;Perth, Rodney Gardens car-park, free on sunday. &nbsp;N56.39458, W03.42189<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After an evening of chatting and drinking with Jo and Ian we have a very quiet night wildcamping on the Spey. &nbsp;So we are up relatively early, coffee and fruit and getting the Hymer tidy for a long drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our on and off travelling companions are heading east for Aberdeen, whilst we will continue south. &nbsp;Not sure, exactly where at this point, but somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Spey_10.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>It\u2019s not unusual for a wildcamping spot to be near an old cemetery or church. &nbsp;Our overnight on the River Spey was the small car-park adjoining an old cemetery. &nbsp;So before we leave we have a 30 minute wander reading headstones.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We say goodbye to Jo and Ian again and wish them a safe journey, before heading off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Cairngorms_4.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We follow the tourist route south (A939). It can be a little confusing as there is a separate \u2018whisky trail\u2019 route as well. &nbsp;Whilst I enjoy the odd single malt, once you have done a distillery or two, you have done them all.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Cairngorms_6.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The further south we drive the higher the road climbs. Pam took this photo at Tomintoul. The clouds are very unusual.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Cairngorms_7.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>On the higher hills the trees disappear and the heather patterns the hillsides. &nbsp;The photo doesn\u2019t do the flowering heather justice.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Cairngorms_8.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We occasionally drop down into the valleys through wooded glens. Perhaps a house or two and the road climbs again. &nbsp;We find this amazing single lane bridge at Corgarff.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Balmoral_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Dropping into the valley again we turn into the car-park for Balmoral.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Balmoral_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The Balmoral Estate was purchased by Queen Victoria in 1855. With her husband Prince Albert, the exist hunting lodge was replaced by the current Castle. &nbsp;Pam enjoys the sunshine on this old iron bridge crossing the River Dee into the estate.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Balmoral_7.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The plantings of canadian and american conifers some 120 years old line the entry.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Balmoral_8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>We see these everywhere in Scotland, but at Balmoral they are perfect. But from listening to the commentary from the head gardener, the focus is on having everything at its best in August when the Queen will take her summer break here.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We lunch back in the Hymer before continuing south once more. &nbsp;Being Sunday afternoon, even in this remote part of the Scottish highlands there is a reasonable amount of traffic. &nbsp;Lots of motorcycles travelling in group are the biggest challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Breamar_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>An ambulance screams passed at some point, we have an ominous feeling. South of Breamar a helicopter lands on the road.
