{"id":11203,"date":"2018-06-29T07:28:20","date_gmt":"2018-06-29T07:28:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=11203"},"modified":"2019-05-26T07:15:01","modified_gmt":"2019-05-25T21:15:01","slug":"kirkwall-orkney-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=11203","title":{"rendered":"Kirkwall, Orkney 2018 \ud83c\udff4\udb40\udc67\udb40\udc62\udb40\udc73\udb40\udc63\udb40\udc74\udb40\udc7f"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Date: &nbsp;27th June 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travelled: &nbsp;43 kilometres from Kirkwall to Burwick, both in the Orkneys.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visited: &nbsp;Kirkwall. &nbsp;Laundromat \u00a314<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stayed: &nbsp;Burwick Port, free with tap and toilet. &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/BBQXkPwiCRzGpNX5A\">N58.74033, W02.97323<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So we spend a quiet evening with four other motorhomes overlooking Shapinsey Sound in Kirkwall. &nbsp;That was until about 5am when a seagull decided to start playing with our radio antenna on the roof. &nbsp;After 25 days on the road we need to do some laundry, so we will have a wander around Kirkwall while the machines do there thing. &nbsp;Hopefully, a relaxing afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Kirkwall_3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Noisy seagulls but a beautiful morning.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Kirkwall_5.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>So we drive a little closer to the centre of the town and pay a \u00a31 to park for 4 hours. We noticed a cruise ship sailing into the port this morning so it no surprise the craft markets are open. &nbsp;We get some semi-sundried tomatoes, very nice with cheese and biscuits later&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Kirkwell_6.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The washing is on (two loads) and we walk the short distance to St Magnus\u2019 Cathedral. It\u2019s seems very large given the size of Kirkwall.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Kirkwall_7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>Built during the 12th century, from local red sandstone. &nbsp;As I\u2019m looking around a swarm of Italian tourist march inside. &nbsp;The tourist ship in the harbour has obviously berthed.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Kirkwall_8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>Lots of ancient epitaphs around the walls follow a similar theme.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Kirkwall_9.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The adjoining cemetery tells the sad stories of young people and children passing. &nbsp;Maybe the various flu epidemics.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Kirkwall_10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>Quick trip back to the laundromat to put everything in the dryer and we walk on to the Bishop\u2019s Palace. &nbsp;The old town hall with Pam in the forground. &nbsp;Must be warm Pam has gone of the shoulder.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Kirkwall_12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>Save me some writing. &nbsp;Entry was \u00a34.50 but free on our membership.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Kirkwall_14.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The Bishop\u2019s Palace stands within a lovely park in central Kirkwall. There are lots of people enjoying Orkney\u2019s summer day. &nbsp;The grounds are free to wander but it costs to enter the ruin, of course.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Kirkwall_15.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Despite being a ruin there are lots of passage ways, rooms and staircases still to explore. Lots of information panels telling stories. We can service the Hymer here and its only 10 minutes to the ferry in the morning.
