{"id":11075,"date":"2018-06-26T07:49:28","date_gmt":"2018-06-26T07:49:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=11075"},"modified":"2019-05-26T07:07:45","modified_gmt":"2019-05-25T21:07:45","slug":"the-old-man-of-hoy-orkney-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=11075","title":{"rendered":"The Old Man of Hoy, Orkney 2018 \ud83c\udff4\udb40\udc67\udb40\udc62\udb40\udc73\udb40\udc63\udb40\udc74\udb40\udc7f"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Date: &nbsp;25th June 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travelled: &nbsp;The Hymer stayed in situ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visited: &nbsp;The island of Hoy, ferry \u00a34.30 pp, bus \u00a36 pp (both return).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stayed: &nbsp;Stromness, long term car-park at the port (2nd night), free with toilet. <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/uZiEvH2PTwG1dXD17\">N58.96712, W03.29482<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hoy is Orkney\u2019s second largest island, it has the highest hills as well. &nbsp;The northern part of the island is a reserve for breeding seabirds. &nbsp;Walking to the Old Man of Hoy is a highly recommended activity on Orkney and today\u2019s our day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Stromness_5.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Looking across Hoy Sound from the port car-park in Stromness. &nbsp;Unfortunatley this photo was taken the evening before our planned walk.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Stromness_7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>We wake a little dusty after a later than usual evening at the Ferry Inn with Ian and Jo. &nbsp;It\u2019s a grey cold morning but the forecast shows no rain as the four of us walk down to the ferry. &nbsp;You don\u2019t come to Scotland for the weather.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Stromness_8.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Soon enough we are on the ferry with about 40 other souls. The passage across Hoy Sound takes about 30 minutes. There is a bit of rock\u2019n\u2019roll but we are made of sturdy stuff.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Hoy_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>That\u2019s Hoy in the distance. The big ferry from the mainland making for Stromness on the right. &nbsp;Our little ferry drops us at the pier in Moaness. &nbsp;A couple of houses nearby and a small shed adjoining the pier is Moaness.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Hoy_3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>But just as it states in the Lonely Planet, a couple of local buses are waiting in Moaness. &nbsp;We ask if this bus goes to Rackwick?, the driver points into the little bus. &nbsp;The bus fills he gestures again to those still waiting and drives off up the valley. &nbsp;We stop again after 10 minutes and he points across the valley and says Dwarfie Stane.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Hoy_5.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>So we follow the path across the floor of the valley of peat to Dwarfie Stane. This 5000 year old burial chamber is the only example of a rock cut tomb in Scotland. &nbsp;I wouldn\u2019t fancy excavating this with modern tools, let alone a flint axe.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Hoy_8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>The actual tomb is inside, then to the right. The locking stone, which now sits outside, would have slide into the main opening.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Hoy_9.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Our bus continues on to Rackwick, at the other end of the valley. At 2.58 the bus arrives at 3.01 the bus departs.
