{"id":10637,"date":"2018-06-17T11:42:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-17T11:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=10637"},"modified":"2019-05-26T06:19:10","modified_gmt":"2019-05-25T20:19:10","slug":"sometimes-sunny-skye-scotland-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=10637","title":{"rendered":"Sometimes Sunny Skye, Scotland 2018 \ud83c\udff4\udb40\udc67\udb40\udc62\udb40\udc73\udb40\udc63\udb40\udc74\udb40\udc7f"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong> Date: 16th June 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travelled: &nbsp;167 kilometres from Tokavaig to Trumpan, both on the Isle of Skye<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visited: &nbsp;Cill Chriosd ruin, Dun Breag Broch and Dunvegan Castle \u00a311pp<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stayed: &nbsp;Small carpark adjacent church ruins near Trumpan. &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/RtRjV7v5152jzMAc8\">N57.55593, W06.64186<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We start the long drive up the peninsula from Tokavaig. &nbsp;It seems that most roads on Skye, other than the A87, are single lane (10\u2019 wide) with passing spots every 200 metres. &nbsp;Not ideal motorhome driving, but then you can apply some intimidation because of the motorhome size. &nbsp;Generally most cars seeing you coming duck into a passing spot and wait for you to pass. &nbsp;But it\u2019s still early and we manage to travel most of the way back up to the A87 without see an oncoming car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Tokavaig_15.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Someone\u2019s building a new house.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We are only back on the A87 for 5 miles before turning south again down the next peninsula for Elgol. &nbsp;Progress is a little slower as the traffic has increased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Cill_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Another 5 miles south and we see an interesting ruin and stop for a look.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Cill_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>This lovely old church and cemetery at Cill Chriosd dates back to 1505 at least.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Cill_3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>It\u2019s a case of dodging the sheep \ud83d\udc11 dung as we wander about.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Cill_5-1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Someone has planted a lovely old rose in a small chapel adjoining the main church.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Cill_6.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We find the graves of two merchant navy men killed in 1939 in a lonely corner.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Elgol_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The narrow road and misty weather don\u2019t diminish the wild beauty of Skye.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Elgol_3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>In Skye it would seem that every cottage we pass has a B&amp;B shingle on the gate. This group of thatch cottages a lovely example.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Elgol_4.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We arrive at Elgol just in time for the rain \u2614. &nbsp;Just our luck, we have come here for the soup and the view from the lighthouse. &nbsp;The soup cafe is closed today and the lighthouse in a complete whiteout of cloud.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Elgol_6.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>More bloody sheep \ud83d\udc0f as we backtrack north, the Cullin Hills on our left and Cullin Sound on our right.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Back on the A87 we stop for fuel and the co-op supermarket, which has some great fruit on offer. &nbsp;The strawberry, blackberry and raspberry are wonderful in the UK this time of year. &nbsp;Continuing north again we turn off for the A863, for Dunvegan Castle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Straun_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Near Straun, the scenery is worth a stop and a leg stretch. The bay opens onto Loch Bracadale.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Straun_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Just around the next bend we find this interesting sign, park and go for a walk.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Straun_3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>It\u2019s a steep walk up the hill to the broch. So our peaceful exploration is about to be spoilt so we move on.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Dunvegen_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>It\u2019s been a long drive, but we finally arrive at Dunvegen Castle, the ancestral home of the Clan MacLeod for some 800 years.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Dunvegen_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>We cough up \u00a311pp and follow the arrows&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Dunvegan_4.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The castle and it\u2019s furnished rooms are beautifully maintained.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Dunvegen_7.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Lots of interesting pieces with notes regarding their age and origin in every room.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Dunvegen_8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>Like all good castles there are secret passages here and there, this one a little spooky.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Dunvegen_9.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>A final walk through the gardens and our visit is complete.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Trumpan_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>It\u2019s been a long day and we look in our database noting a wildcamping spot at Trumpan on the far end of the peninsula. We swing into the small carpark with another motorhome. We step out to say hi and find we ourselves talking to Ian and Jo from Brisbane.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Trumpan_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>There is nothing here but a lonely little church ruin and graveyard, which will suit us nicely for the night.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Trumpan_3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We have now seen several of these old church ruins on Skye. This one all the more delightful as the sun has appeared again. &nbsp;Apparently during the english reformation hundreds of churches were sacked and many never repaired.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Trumpan_9.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Skye may well be the most beautiful place we have ever visited.
