{"id":10380,"date":"2018-06-11T06:51:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-11T06:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=10380"},"modified":"2020-07-14T11:01:11","modified_gmt":"2020-07-14T01:01:11","slug":"the-castles-gardens-of-galloway-scotland-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=10380","title":{"rendered":"The Castle&#8217;s &#038; Garden&#8217;s of Galloway, Scotland. 2018 \ud83c\udff4\udb40\udc67\udb40\udc62\udb40\udc73\udb40\udc63\udb40\udc74\udb40\udc7f"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Date: 9th June 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travelled: 126 kilometres from Castle Douglas to Ballantrae, Scotland.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visited: &nbsp;Cardoness Castle, \u00a34.50pp and Castle Kennedy Gardens, \u00a34.50pp<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stayed: \u00a0Ballantrae, on the beach, free. <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/8KbVZoqNnoEfcpL26\">N55.10364, W05.00862<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today we continue further west along the southern Galloway coast before turning north. &nbsp;Another sunny day according to the forecast so we are up relatively early. &nbsp;A last check of the Hymer and we say goodbye to Castle Douglas and turn onto the A75.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within half an hour we turn again for the village of Gatehouse of the Fleet, they have some interesting names for places in the UK. &nbsp;The village stands on a hill overlooking fleet bay. &nbsp;We don\u2019t know the history of it all but it does sound formidable. &nbsp;From here it\u2019s only a short drive to Cardoness Castle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Cardoness_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption>We pull up outside the castle and a lady looks out the office door, perhaps a little excited we must be her first customers for the day. Pam calls out to her saying we are going to have a coffee first. She disappears back into the office.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Cardoness_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"825\" height=\"1100\"\/><figcaption>When we finally walked into the office the lady seemed a bit disappointed that we had a membership and entry was free. &nbsp;Asking if we were Australian, she then enquired if we have any McCullochs in our family, I responded with I had a McCulloch chainsaw but I sold it years ago. &nbsp;Not sure if she saw the humour in it or just thought I was a pratt. &nbsp;Cardoness Castle is another impressive tower house built in the 14th century. &nbsp;This one by the McCulloch Family.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Cardoness_3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Pam sitting on a park bench at the base of the tower, taking in the view. By the way this garden is not covered by our Scottish Environment Membership much to Pam\u2019s displeasure.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Castle_Kennedy_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>This is the ruin of Castle Kennedy, I now what your thinking another bloody tower house ! No this is just the backdrop for some 75 acres of gardens, both formal and informal.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Castle_Kennedy_3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Didn\u2019t wear these hats in Norway last year but here we\u2019re in Scotland, catching a tan.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Castle_Kennedy_4.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The gardens are full of various rhododendrons in huge clusters. &nbsp;The gardens sit along an isthmus between two lochs.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Castle_Kennedy_6.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Looking across the lily pond which was in full flower. &nbsp;According to the blurb most of the spadework required to build the garden was completed in 1730.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Castle_Kennedy_8.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Pam enjoying a rest at the far end of the gardens. It takes more than 90 minutes to walk the path we choose. Lochinch Castle which is really more of a stately home stands at the far end of the estate, it the current home to the laird.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We wander back to the Hymer and drive the last couple of miles into Stranraer for a very late lunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Stranraer_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We find a nice parking spot on the waterfront. It\u2019s low tide but still a pleasant aspect for lunch. The Lonely Planet describes Stranraer as an old ramshackle port.
