{"id":10345,"date":"2018-06-08T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-08T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=10345"},"modified":"2019-05-25T08:35:30","modified_gmt":"2019-05-24T22:35:30","slug":"the-castles-of-dumfries-scotland-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/?p=10345","title":{"rendered":"The Castle\u2019s of Dumfries, Scotland 2018 \ud83c\udff4\udb40\udc67\udb40\udc62\udb40\udc73\udb40\udc63\udb40\udc74\udb40\udc7f"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong> Date: 8th June 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travelled: &nbsp;161 kilometres from Keswick, England to Castle Douglas, Scotland.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visited: Gretna, Caelaverock Castle \u00a34.80pp, Dumfries and Threave Castle \u00a34.50pp<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stayed: Municipal campsite in Castle Douglas, \u00a325, <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/WKEp6WKLPBjbMbHh8\">N54.93630, W03.92929<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its 4.30 in the morning and the sun has pocked it\u2019s nose up. &nbsp;Feeling a little dusty this morning for some reason. &nbsp;Rolling over the thought of too much lager with Karl last night is quickly dismissed. &nbsp;I roll over and its now 5.30, so I get up to start working on the blog and put the coffee machine on. &nbsp;By 6.30 it\u2019s time to say goodbye to Keswick heading east to Penrith (not that murky place in the western suburbs of Sydney) and make for the Scottish border. &nbsp;We by-pass Carlisle as Karl doesn\u2019t have a kind word to say about and &nbsp;roll across the border in Greta Green.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Greta_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We finally cross into Scotland \ud83c\udff4\udb40\udc67\udb40\udc62\udb40\udc73\udb40\udc63\udb40\udc74\udb40\udc7f 5 days after arriving at Heathrow. &nbsp;It feels good to finally be in Scotland and start our tour.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Greta_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Greta Green is famous for weddings \ud83d\udc70 apparently. English law required couples under the age of 21 to have their parents written approval before they marry. &nbsp;But under Scottish Law it was open slather, so Greta Green found it\u2019s place in histroy.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As it was only 9.30 in the morning, surprisingly no weddings were taking place. &nbsp;Apparently 5,000 couples retake their wedding vows here annually. &nbsp;I asked Pam if she would like to re-new our vows, she checked on the cost stating it\u2019s not in the budget ! &nbsp;So we called into the bakery and picked up a half loaf of wholegrain (not my favourite I can assure you) and a couple of Scottish pancakes which were excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Caerlaverock_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Continuing west on the A75 we turn onto the A724 for Caerlaverock Castle. The A724 was narrow and pothole ridden, so you may wish to consider having your motorhome airlifted in to avoid minor breakages.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Caerlaverock_2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Caerlaverock Castle is considered the classic Scottish version of a moated stronghold. Built in the 1300\u2019s it has held out against those english bastards for 300 years with varying success.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Visiting castles and historic places in the UK is very expensive if you intend doing more than a few. &nbsp;As we are here for a month or more we take a two concessional memberships in the Historic Environment Scotland for \u00a377. &nbsp;This gives us access to all their sites, but I will still list the normal concessional price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Caerlaverock_3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Despite being a ruin for 500 years it\u2019s a very interesting to explore. There are various information boards and you get a feel for the place.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Caerlaverock_4.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We wander as Australian\u2019s do, there is so much history here, all we have is Mel Gibson and he was a New Zealander&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We drive on to Dumfries for lunch&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Dumfries_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"999\"\/><figcaption>We park near this lovely old iron bridge in Dumfries for lunch. Constructed over the River Nith in 1875 is still looks good for it\u2019s age, as does Pam.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>After lunching we continue west on the A75 for Castle Douglas. &nbsp;Just to save confusion let\u2019s just settle on the fact there is no Castle Douglas at Castle Douglas, however you can visit Castle Threave only 2 miles from Castle Douglas. &nbsp;As we drive into Castle Douglas we find a lovely little campsite on Carlingwark Loch. &nbsp;At \u00a325 its a rip\u2019 but we have not serviced the Hymer for 4 days and things need to be done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Threave_1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We get the scooter off the Hymer and ride the 2.5 miles to Threave Castle (good practice for Italy)&nbsp;rather than drive the Hymer back out of the campsite. &nbsp;Threave sits on a natural island below Loch Ken on the River Dee. &nbsp;This provided additional security before plastic boats and outboard motors were developed.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Threave_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"825\" height=\"1098\"\/><figcaption>It\u2019s our second ruined castle for the day, but what I found interesting was how well hidden the castle was. &nbsp;The lay of the land and the groves of trees along the river virtually made it impossible to see until you arrived at the dock opposite the castle. &nbsp;Yes Pam has new sunglasses so any comments regarding how nice they are would be appreciated.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelandpamstravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Threave_5.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>We enjoy wandering the tower and the main hall for a while, but the guard is calling time and wants to go home.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>So we scooter back to the Hymer put the scooter on the rack, empty and fill whats needs filling before calling it a day&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael and Pam<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"bpp_credits\" style=\"clear: both; float: right; width: 200px; height: 70px; text-align: right;\"><a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blogpadpro.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"vertical-align: middle; font-size: 8pt; color: #999;\">Edited with BlogPad Pro<\/span><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"vertical-align: middle; padding-left: 5px;\" src=\"http:\/\/files.blogpadpro.com\/images\/speech-bubble.png\" width=\"25\" height=\"25\"><\/figure><\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Date: 8th June 2018 Travelled: &nbsp;161 kilometres from Keswick, England to Castle Douglas, Scotland.
