Early morning in Ketchikan, Alaska. 2012<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

After our second night on board the Infinity, Pam and I woke to find ourselves docked in Ketchikan. The air is icy cold but the morning sunny, the wind almost still. The views of the town and surrounds from deck 11 are quite spectacular. The town has a bit of a wild west feel.<\/p>\n

We have booked for a sea kayak excursion around the Tattoosh Islands, we board our bus at 9 am for the 15 mile journey on Ketchikan’s only highway to meet our boat for the second leg of the journey to Tattoosh. We then board a large hard bottom inflatable which take us the last 5 miles to our sea kayaks. \u00a0We spend the next 2 hours paddling around the Tattoosh Islands. The silver salmon are running and all the locals are on the water trying to fill their freezers for the upcoming winter. The water is black and very deep unless you remain within a couple of meters of the shore line. Surprising the water is quite warm at 60 F compared to the air temperature of 40 F. \u00a0We cruise past seals and American bald eagles, I remind the Americans with us the Emu is a far more majestic bird ! While it was a great adventure we were glad to extract ourselves from our kayak and straighten up with a hot chocolate and cookie.<\/p>\n

As I write this journal we steam north. Orca whales and a pod of dolphins are providing an escort.<\/p>\n\n
