Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Copenhagen (part 1), Denmark 2017 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฐ

Travelled: 40 kilometres from Malmรถ, Sweden to Copenhagen, Denmark.

Visited: ร˜resund Bridge SEK360.

Stayed: Parking area adjacent sporting fields near Christiania, no facilities but a great free spot. N55.67210, E12.60720

Despite the gloomy forecast its a beautiful morning.  There is a chill in the air and a good breeze but its not raining.  A couple of other motorhomes joined us in our beach-side parking spot near Malmรถ, last night.  Having some friendly neighbours makes for a good nights sleep.  We have been for a walk around the nearby marina, but Denmark is just over the bridge and we are looking forward to visiting Copenhagen.  So we pack up, service the Hymer and get going.

The ร˜resund bridge is 8 kilometres long from Malmรถ, Sweden.  It then drops down into a tunnel for the final 4 kilometres into Copenhagen, Denmark. I should add it’s double layered with trains running under the road carriage.
Its an expensive crossing at SEK360 or โ‚ฌ48 for vehicle under 6 metres, double if more than 6 ! I will briefly describe our stop at the toll booth. We stop the polite young lady asked how we would like to pay. Pam responds, we are only 6 metres ! The young woman responds, you have been measured at over 6 metres, Pam responds, well we are not ! The young lady states we will need to measure you, OK says Pam. Traffic on the bridge stops as the young lady leaves the booth. The measuring process begins, in short the Hymer has to be positioned on the measuring spot this takes some time as I go forward and back to get it just right. Then the young lady goes to the back and looks from one side then the other and came back stating, I think your’re just over. Pam returns with, no were’re not. By this time free trade between Sweden and Denmark appear to be at risk as there are 20 trucks behind us. Suddenly the young lady says OK 6 metres will do. Pam hands over the credit card and European trade resumes.
We are taking our time enjoying the view at half the price when the truck who just passed us suddenly swerves across the road. Pam has the camera out. A rear door fell off a HGV hitting the truck that was following. A car then into the back of that truck. No one was hurt, but we were glad we weren’t a minute earlier.
Opps…

Thanks to Bluey we find this free spot in the carpark adjoining a huge complex of sporting fields. It’s just across the canal from Christianshavn, about 7-8 minutes on the cycleway to the city.
So we cycle our way across a couple of canals towards the city.  A sight seeing boat makes its way up the canal in Christianshavn.  That’s Papirรธen or Paper Island on the right.
The canal at Nyhavn, being the landmark tourist canal in Copenhagen. There are a lot of people here, far more than we have seen in Helsinki or Stockholm.  In the interest of not crashing into any Korean tourists on our first morning we lock up the bikes and go for a walk.
Pam looking stylish as usual.
This square is Kongens Nytorv and it’s little coffee spot. From the signs we can see they are building a new Metro in Copenhagen and it seems there is to be a station being built everywhere you want to take a picture.
The Theatre ๐ŸŽญ Opera House is also on the Kongens Nytorv.
The Danish Royal Navy Church is our next discovery.
This church is full of history. The alter piece dates to 1661, the baptism font 1647.  Everywhere you look there is something special.
Another image from within the church. I have probably mentioned before that churches throughout Europe will often have a model of a ship hanging from the ceiling, a reminder to pray for those at sea.  We are, after all in the Danish Royal Navy Church
The Old Stock Exchange, nice copper roof !
As you know we don’t eat out too often, but Pam authorises lunch out today.  Our bikes were chained up near HM800, so we wandered over to look at the menu. I had the fish cakes and Pam the bouillabaisse, the meals were great and reasonably priced.

Comfortably full of seafood we cycle back to the Hymer and have a little nap.  Planning to head out in the late afternoon fully refreshed.  I was surprised by how tired I was but maybe it was the craft beer at HM800.

The shadows are getting longer when we cycle into Amalienborg Palace Square. The Guard is changing and we watch them slowly do their thing with a couple of hundred Korean tourists.

Frederik’s Church just across from the Amalienborg Palace. Although the tourist map refers to as the Marble Church, due to its interior.  We come here twice in an attempt to visit this church and both times it was closed, contrary to its published opening hours ?
We find Copenhagen’s Gefion Fountain.  Its the largest monument in Copenhagen, built in 1908 to celebrate Carlsberg Breweries 50th year.
Made famous from the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, The Little Mermaid.  A magnet for Korean and Chinese tourist, who are so pushy and rude I am getting a real thing about them.

On our way back to the Hymer we stop off at Paper Island. There is a huge hall of street food and beer vendors here. Yoko Ono has an exhibition on here as well. Pam notes the entry fee and says ‘tell her she’s dreaming’. So we get a takeaway and go back to the Hymer for a well deserved beer and wine with our meal.
