Tourist Route 11 Geiranger, Norway 2017 ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ด

Travelled: 127 kilometres from Nesje to Ovstestรธlen along TR11 the Geiranger.

Visited: Just driving the Geiranger section of the road, Mount Dalsnibba toll, NOK130

Stayed: Picnic area car park, free with toilets and bin. N62.38430 E07.57650

While the total length of TR11 is only 104 kilometres its a slow drive.  Being one of Norway’s big tourist attraction, sections of the road are full of tourist coaches and people on holidays.  There are two very steep climbs and descents.  One being the Trollstigen, which is famous from ‘Top Gear’ and its use in movies etc.

A tourist map of the Geiranger-Trollstigen

We pack up and hit the road after a quiet evening in Nesje, we only travel about 6-7 kilometres when the sun beams through.

The sun shines on Hjelle, so Pam wants to do a walk whist the sun is shining. So we drive around into town and park by the fjord.
The old highway into Hjelle has been turned in a cycle and walking path. So we get a 45 minute walk in, before having breakfast over looking the water.
So the climb up the Geiranger begins and we leave the sun, for drizzle and mist.
Once on the plateau its an easy drive and very pretty. The road is about a 1,000 metres ASL along here, the adjoining mountains about 1,600.
The weather clears a little and we turn for the toll-road to Dalsnibba.  We climb over 500 metres in the next 5klms. We roll into the carpark at the top of Dalsnibba.  Cannot believe they allow tourist coaches up here.  One mistake and there’s no second chance here.
The sun is out again providing a wonderful view down the valley. The road snakes its way down to Geiranger (town). That’s a cruise ship on the Geiranger Fjord.
Hopefully this panorama will open and provide a wider view of the Geiranger valley.
Always setting new trends in camper-car fashion, Pam out in Dalsnibba in her slippers !
The sun only lasts for 10 minutes, then it starts to drizzle. But the drizzle soon turns to snowflakes โ„๏ธ. The temperature drops quickly and the flakes get larger. So we scurry back to the warmth of the Hymer and have a coffee.
Coming down Dalsnibba, in the snow.
We travel slowly down the serpentine road toward Geiranger. Slowing passing coaches full of Koreans and numerous motorhomes driven by people who don’t move over far enough.  If you look on the hill to the right and above the cruise ship you will see the start of the Trollstigen going up the mountain.

On the point of motorhomes during our travels in Norway.  The roads are full of them. But I would hazzard a guess that half of them are hired either locally or on hire from Germany.  Everywhere we stop we see McRent or Avis.  The problem being they don’t keep far enough to the right as they drive by and take up two spots when they park.  Ok I’ve got that off my chest.
