Stayed : Bad Waldsee Stellplatz โฌ10, all the usual, electricity at โฌ1 per 2kw. N47.91475 E9.76049, then Tuttlingen Stellplatz free, all the usual service, but no power, โฌ1 for water (one night). N47.98525 E8.81365
Our goal for the coming weekend is to make for the Black Forest, do a walk or two, look at some cuckoo clocks and eat some black forest gateau. However we cannot pass Bad Waldsee without a visit. So as I mentioned a blog or two ago German towns starting with ‘Bad’ such as Bad Waldsee are generally old roman spa towns or therme towns to use the German expression. Just to add to the complication any town ending in the letters ‘see’ indicates it has a lake nearby.
But that’s not why we are visiting Bad Waldsee. Its the site of the Hymer Museum, Hymer’s German factory and head office. After 10 long years where bringing our Hymer home for a re-union. Well in actual fact its very popular with the Hymer fraternity to visit if your passing so we do…
Bad Waldsee has possibly the best stellplatz in German. It has big wide spaces, concrete hard stand and lovely facilities. Its not cheap at โฌ10, but we have paid a lot more for less.
The stellplatz is just across the way from Bad Waldsee Therme. Apparently famous in Germany for its pools and therapies. We have passed a few of these thermes whilst in Germany. Anyway our neighbors have been telling us they come here a couple of times a year just to visit the Therme. So we decide to give it a go (it was good). As you can see Pam did let me buy a markdown beanie at the โฌ2 shop. As I now have a beanie, Pam said I’ll be fine to cook outside tonight. It was a balmy 5ยฐ so it wasn’t a problem (for Pam in any case).
The Hymer museum is a flash affair, a purpose built building that takes you through the history of the Hymer company and it’s subsidiaries.
This early 60’s Reismobile looks like an early combi, except for it’s size. Imagine a combi-van almost 7 metres long. Note the roof mounted sun deck.
This very rare Edsel pulling a stainless steal ‘American Streamliner’ caravan was a hoot.
We had plans to wander about the altstadt of Bad Waldsee but the drizzle has set in again. So we decide driving in the wet is better than sitting around the Hymer all afternoon. We pack up the Hymer and continue west towards the Black Forest. There is a free stellplatz at Tuttlingen and we arrive there in the late afternoon. The weather has cleared a little, so we take a walk into the Zentrum.
Tuttlingen stands on the headwaters of River Danube, the trees along it’s banks reflect the autumn colours we see nearly everywhere.
Not sure what this fellow is trying to achieve but the steer is having none of it. A not so little bit of street art, Tuttlingen.
Along with several other campers we enjoy a very quiet night in the stellplatz at Tuttlingen. It’s a very cold morning but dry so we get the bikes of the Hymer and ride the 8km to Mohringen for a little exercise. We find these poles in many German villages, this one lists the occupations or services of Mohringen.
An interesting, if not slightly inappropriate fountain in the square at Mohringen.
We have not found a German village yet that isn’t worth having a wander around. Another very unusual fountain showing a peasant woman with her two children in Mohringen. Back at the Hymer we put the bikes away and continue our journey west.
An hour later we turn north at Neustadt into the heart of the Black Forest. We stop at a rest area for lunch and take in the view.
