Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Ludinghausen, Germany 2016 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช

Travelled : 114 kilometres from Xanten to Ludinghausen in the Northern Rhineland of Germany.

Visited : LudingHausen including Vischering Castle โ‚ฌ1 pp and Ludinghausen Castle

Stayed : A dedicated motorhome spot in a municipal carpark in Ludinghausen. โ‚ฌ8 per day, free overnight, no services. N51.76889 E7.44455

On the road from Xanten heading north east we strike a lot of traffic, something we haven’t seen through Belgium or the Netherlands.  There is a change in pace in Germany, everyone is in a hurry.  Turning onto the A43 motorway its really busy with a lot more trucks and very fast moving cars.  It’s not surprising as our path takes us around the industrial cities of Duseldorf, Essen and Dortmund which are so big they have merged into a continuous line of power stations, chemical plants and huge factories.

We turn off at our exit and resume a more steady pace.  The country is rich and green, there are cycle ways here and there with lots of people hiking or cycling.  It’s still the summer holidays in Germany and people are doing what they find relaxing.  We cross the Dortmund Canal as we enter Ludinghausen and set about finding somewhere to park.  After a couple of false starts we find a nice little carpark very close to the altstadt, with a dedicated motorhome parking spot under a big tree.  It’s hot and sunny today and shade the key.  Checking the park and pay meter โ‚ฌ4 will get us close enough to the ‘free overnight’ time, so we are set to explore Ludinghausen.

Not a very good picture of Pam or this old fellow she has sidled up to.  We walk the lane ways of the altstadt, lots of dress shops, cafes and restaurants.
Ludinghausen is a town surrounded by water.  There seems to be streams or canals running everywhere.  This old mill and wheel opposite the tourist information a good example.
It’s a pretty and peaceful place, all the parks and the altstadt have free public wifi.  So there are lots of young people sitting in the shade on Facebook or whatever.
There is a mixture of old and new building throughout Ludinghausen.  It seems most people get water frontage.
After a late lunch we get the bikes out and head off on the cycle way to explore the castles.  Pam seems drawn to bronze statues, maybe a can of Brasso for her birthday.
Vischering Castle, sits on a small island within a wetland.  Looks like a 14th century castle should, with its drawbridge and moat.  Unfortunately the castle itself is closed for 12 months whilst renovations are underway.  So we visited the small museum.
Ludinghausen Castle is much closer to town, but also surrounded by water.  It’s really not what we would call a castle, more like a stately old house.  You can wander about but it appeared to be closed and empty.
