Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Amersfoort, The Netherlands 2016 🇳🇱

Travelled : 61 kilometres from Amsterdam to Amersfoort, The Netherlands.

Visited : Amersfoort, Our Lady’s Tower @€5 pp

Stayed : Amerstoort Marina Aire, 3 spots on the bank of the canal.  The usual services including power and free wifi. €5.50  N52.16210  E05.37837

It’s Monday morning and we have seen enough of Amsterdam for this trip.  Apparently we are not the only ones as a queue at the service point soon develops.  Not surprising as the place has been full all weekend, that’s about 150 motorhomes we guess.  We have charged everything again and give the Hymer a thorough vacuum and consumed as much free wifi as technically possible.  We join the queue at #6, getting a little frustrated watching people take 10 minutes for what should take less than 5.

We have been reading about Amersfoort and decide to drive over a have a look and see if we can get a spot in the aire.  Our database only shows 3 spots, so we give our luck a run.  Pam wants to do the laundry and the Hymer needs some fuel.  On the outskirts of Amersfoort we find a cheap service station with a self serve laundromat and a bakery attached.  An hour or so later we have a full tank of diesel, a bag of clean cloths and just finished our morning coffee with a delicious apple and walnut roll from the bakery.

Things are looking good today as the aire has two empty places, so we settle in.

Parked up in the little aire in Amersfoort. After asking several in depth questions the machine charges us €5.50 per 24 hours. Seems like a bargain, all the usual service including power and bonus free wifi if we walk across the bridge to the marina.
Love this French day boat that arrived just after us.  Note that lift bridge is only some 30 metres from the Hymer.
The Koppelport Gate.  Amersfoort is a 15th century town surround by 2 canals, an inner and an outer. Like moats they provide defensive lines around the town but also a transport and trade routes as well.
Certainly more beautiful than any canal in Amsterdam.  There seems to be real pride in how the town presents.  Flower pots line the streets and it’s all very neat and tidy.
Walking the Langestr seems a very popular pastime this afternoon.

………….day 2.

It was not the best night’s sleep last night.  The lift bridge seemed to bang loudly every time something larger than a car crossed over it.  This kept us awake until after well after 11pm when the traffic subsided.  Funnily enough they opened the bridge this morning and it would not close.  When several bridge experts arrived and fiddled away for a while they manage to close it.  But then it would not open.  Subsequently the canal on both side has filled with barges and cruisers.  It’s made for an entertaining day.

Our Lady’s Tower in Amersfoort. Your right it’s not the highest medieval tower in The Netherlands at 98.3 metres.  It was only after climbing the  346 steps that we found it was the second highest medieval tower in The Netherlands.  Pam asked for her €5 back !
The tower provides wonderful views around the district and the weather coming our way.
The carillon bells near the top of the tower.  There are 100 bells in the carillon.  It’s an amazing structure given construction started in 1444 and completed in 1500.

Apart from the tower and a long walk through the old town, our second day has been something of a lay day.  I have fitted new wipers blades and radio antenna to the Hymer (replacing the one I broke parking under a tree in Greece last year), so it’s not been a wasted day.  We now have two new neighbors, they both have dogs.  Max and Murphy don’t appear to like each other, I think it’s just a misunderstanding, Max is German and Murphy is Dutch.  I think Murphy may have mentioned the war !
