Tenterfield, New South Wales 🇦🇺 2021

Visited: Tenterfield, NSW.

The rain stopped overnight sometime, but there’s still a lot of water laying about. There is probably 25 or more caravans and motorhomes here this morning enjoying the free stop. Looks like many have been here for more than a day or two given the solar panels set up around some.

Another early start this morning. We have a coffee, some fruit and ready the Jayco by 8am. Setting the GPS for Tenterfield we make our way east on the Shearer’s Way.

We only pass a couple of cars till we turn onto the Glenlyon Dam Road which takes us closer to the border. The road narrows significantly but as there’s little traffic, it‘s not more than an inconvenience.

Passing through the tiny village of Mingoola we drive on another couple of kms to the NSW Queensland border. We stop for breakfast next to the un-named bridge crossing the Dumaresq River.

On the NSW side of the border we turn onto the Bruxner Highway. The road improves significantly as it widens. Twenty minutes later we turn onto the New England Highway and it only a few kms to Tenterfield. It‘s comforting to know Gladys is looking after us again.

We make our way to Tenterfield Showground’s Campsite (nice to be back in NSW where showgrounds provide a cheaper option) and find ourselves a spot. Getting out of the Jayco we are a bit surprised by how cold it is. Can see our new little heater getting a flogging later today.

Settled in we go for a walk up town. The showgrounds are just a couple of blocks from the centre of town so it‘s not far. Tenterfield has a population of over 4,000 people and the New England Highway runs straight down the Main Street.

Our first afternoon in Tenterfield complete we make our way back to the Jayco as the cold descend. The slow cooker has been simmering away all afternoon,so dinner tonight is set.

Its a very cold and foggy morning in Tenterfield. The little fan heater has been humming away since 5am, so the Jayco is very toasty. Hence it‘s not an early start today. The showground manager who was very courteous and helpful, told us about a clearance sale was on today so we walk up there on our way to the railway station.

We managed to pick up some fabulous gifts for the children, so next Christmas is settled.

We go on up the hill to the Railway Museum at the old railway station. The princely sum of $7.50 pp is a bit of a bargain. The collection is extensive and very well maintained.

Finished at the museum we walk another 500m further up the hill to the cemetery.

Tenterfield is a wonderful town to visit. Now matter where you wander we seem to find something worth a photo. I have added a few randomly below.

Once again it‘s getting cold when we return to the Jayco. We BBQ some king salmon from Karumba for dinner and call it a night. We’ll continue south tomorrow but that’s another day.
