Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

The Murrumbidgee, New South Wales ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ 2020

Date: 24th September 2020

Travelled: 230 kms from Lake Cargelligo to Hay on the Murrumbidgee River

Visited: Gunbar and Hay

Stayed: Hay Services Club, free with limited services. S34.50062, E144.84982

Budget:

We depart Lake Cargelligo after another โ€˜return and earnโ€™ adventure at the local FoodWorks. $3 heavier and Pam a little happier. At least there was no queue this morning. The day seems to be getting colder as the morning progresses.

Turning for Rankin Springs, then the Mid West Highway from there. Again the roads are very quiet just the odd truck. Looks like there is no rush of grey nomads heading west, waiting for South Australia border to open.

Ninety minutes on we find an unmarked rest stop at Gunbar or at least what was once the town of Gunbar. So we stop, I get the generator going, the Nespresso spinning and enjoy a we enjoy coffee and a break.

Seeing the nearby information panels, we go over to investigate. During our travels we have stumbled across some memorable stops, Gunbar and the story of John William Alexander (Jacko) Jackson VC, DCM is one of them.

All that remain of the town of Gunbar, a corrugated iron school house and a brick church.

A remarkable story of a boy from a small town that now longer exists.

Arriving in Hay we do a quick lap of Lachlan Street before finding the Services Club, which has a dedicated free parking area for motorhomes and caravans. As the day is getting on, we get the bikes ready and head off.

My Mum was a Hay girl, after her passing my Sisterโ€™s and I scattered her ashes along the banks of the Murrumbidgee. Anyway Pam and I ride down to the river and ride the paths along the Murrumbidgee.

Back at the Camper we get dressed and go to the Services Club for drinks and dinner. We chat away with some locals as Pam tries to win a raffle. The Chinese restaurant at the club serves an excellent meal and we have a generally great night.
