Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

County Mayo, Ireland ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช 2019

Date: 23rd June 2019

Travelled: 193 kilometres from Clifden, County Galway to Keel Beach, County Mayo

Visited: Just driving the Wild Atlantic Way

Stayed: Keel Beach West, upper car-park, free with T+B N53.96953, W10.19357

Budget: 21 days @ โ‚ฌ91 per day

The wind was gusting out of the south-west all night. We woke a couple of times to the noise of flags flapping and the wind whistling through the rigging of the yacht next door. We had planned a walk back into Clifden this morning, but the wind hasnโ€™t abated by the time coffee is done. So we drive back to town, park and go for a walk.

It was a short walk, we only got a couple of blocks and it started to drizzle. The drizzle turned to rain.

Since arriving in Ireland it has rained pretty much every day but just 10 minutes and the sun soon returns. Not today.

The last couple of kms are steep and the drop precipitous, but we make the viewing point safely.

We have breakfast at the viewing point whilst the Hymer rocks in the wind. I exchange messages with our daughter Alix, whose on a surf safari in Morocco. Weather looks a little better Agadir.

A panorama from the Sky Road viewing point.

Always the Girl Scout Pam keeps her emergency beanie, scarf and Ugg boots at the Hymerโ€™s door.

An hour later we find a parking spot with a view overlooking Hillary Harbour. We passed Kylemore Abbey a few kms back but didnโ€™t see the point of paying the entrance fee in the rain.

Nice view if you kept the wipers on.

So we continued on in the rain though Westport before turning onto the R319 for Achill Island. We have the co-ordinates for a stop at West Keel Beach.

The road to Keel Beach West is a little challenging in the conditions, but we arrive safely and take a spot overlooking the beach.

An hour later the wind rises again and the Hymer start rocking with the gusts. Itโ€™s not going to be a good night, so we retreat back to Keel.

Opposite the pub at Keel we find a nice solid windbreak and set up for what proves to be a quiet evening.
