Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Cliffs of Moher, Ireland ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช 2019

Date: 21st June 2019

Travelled: 66 kilometres from Milltown Malbay to Ballyvaughan both in County Clare

Visited: Cliffs of Moher

Stayed: Ballyvaughan Port, free +toilet. N53.12115, W09.14783

Budget: 19 days @ โ‚ฌ92 per day

It was a late start this morning. We didnโ€™t walk home from Lynchโ€™s until almost 11pm, thatโ€™s late for these black ducks. Mind you it was still twilight as we did.

Having power for the the first time in almost 3 weeks, we re-charged this and that, used the toaster for breakfast and gave the Hymer a good vacuum throughout. We then serviced the Hymer and closed the gate as we left.

We pop into the SuperValu and nearly get collected by this Massey Ferguson coming in. He was 80 if he was a day ! Not the straightest park youโ€™ve ever seen either.

We drive past Trump International Golf Course, then Lahinch Golf Course where the Irish Open starts in a week or so. The west coast of Ireland has no shortage of links style golf courses. We follow the WAW around Hags Head for Cliffs of Moher.

We find a huge car-park โ‚ฌ5 pp (seniors) and park the Hymer. There are buses and cars everywhere. Itโ€™s a nice day and half of Ireland is here. Thatโ€™s Oโ€™Brienโ€™s Tower (circa 1835) on the point.

We start walking south for Hags Head. The crowd thins out after the first kilometre. The path follows the cliff edge closely much to Pams concern. Itโ€™s 5.5 kilometres from tower to tower, the walk (return) takes us 3 hours. At the highest point the cliffs are 214 asl. The weather is near perfect and we have a clear view of the Isles of Arann across Galway Bay.

Back in the Hymer have a coffee and a very late lunch before continuing north on the WAW. We turn onto the R479, drive through Doolin and follow the coast around โ€˜The Burrenโ€™ a strange landscape of grey rock. We continue past Black Head to Ballyvaughan.

Please note the last 20 kms to Ballyvaughan is atrocious ! If you love you motorhome donโ€™t shake the shit out of it, on this section of road !!!
