Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Val di Sole, Italy 2018 ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น

Date:  24th September 2018

Travelled:  98 kms from Castelfondo to Terlago. Region of Trento, Italy.

Visited:  The Val di Sole and the Brenta Dolomites.

Stayed:  Lake Terlago, free car-park, just a bin. N46.09626, E11.05488

Budget:  113 days @ โ‚ฌ92 per day.

Other than the odd clanging of a cow bell, it was a quiet evening in Castelfondo.  We did hear the wind blowing at first light, but thought nothing more of it.  By coffee time the wind has blown yesterdayโ€™s mist out of the valley below and we have a crystal clear view.

Yesterday evenings mist have been replaced by clear skies.
Mind you itโ€™s much colder this morning.  Our first chilli morning for 2018.

We have coffee and breakfast planning our day.  The Lonely Planet recommends the drive down the Val di Sole (SS43 and SS42), then turn down through the Brenta Dolomites (SS239) south to Lake Garda.  However we have a couple of days to kill, so we will take a detour for Trento instead of Garda.

For the first 30 minutes we drive apple orchards, then more apple orchards. Lago di Santa Giustina is sometimes difficult to see being so deep in the valley.  Near Cles we stop for a quick Lidl top-up, but we also find a huge dam wall.  So it appears Santa Giustina is a man-made lake.
The orchards continue until we turn onto the SS239 and the Dolomites loom in the distance.
Coffee break…
Pam has a bit of a thing about Italian โ€˜flagmanโ€™ ?
The road continues to climb, we go through a couple of long tunnels and we are in the middle of the Brenta Dolomites.

In the centre of the range the peaks are well over 3,000m and the permanent snow and ice brightly reflect the sun.
Itโ€™s been another day of dodging cyclists, motorcycles, sports cars and the odd tractor. But a lovely drive all the same. We set the GPS for a free stop on the lake at Terlago.

Despite the GPS trying to remove both the side mirrors and almost giving Pam a stroke, we find the lake.
We find ourselves a nice level spot, with a view of the lake.

Our little car-park is only 10 klms from Trento, so it will be easy to pop in there for a visit tomorrow.  Pam insists on a walk around the lake before drinks, so we take a 30 minute walk.  There is a cable ski park on the lake, a few young people provide entertainment whilst we have a drink and prepare dinner.  Another day just slips by…
