Michael and Pam's Travels Our European Motorhome Adventures and other Travels

Sometimes Sunny Skye, Scotland 2018 ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ

Date: 16th June 2018

Travelled:  167 kilometres from Tokavaig to Trumpan, both on the Isle of Skye

Visited:  Cill Chriosd ruin, Dun Breag Broch and Dunvegan Castle ยฃ11pp

Stayed:  Small carpark adjacent church ruins near Trumpan.  N57.55593, W06.64186

We start the long drive up the peninsula from Tokavaig.  It seems that most roads on Skye, other than the A87, are single lane (10โ€™ wide) with passing spots every 200 metres.  Not ideal motorhome driving, but then you can apply some intimidation because of the motorhome size.  Generally most cars seeing you coming duck into a passing spot and wait for you to pass.  But itโ€™s still early and we manage to travel most of the way back up to the A87 without see an oncoming car.

Someoneโ€™s building a new house.

We are only back on the A87 for 5 miles before turning south again down the next peninsula for Elgol.  Progress is a little slower as the traffic has increased.

Another 5 miles south and we see an interesting ruin and stop for a look.
This lovely old church and cemetery at Cill Chriosd dates back to 1505 at least.
Itโ€™s a case of dodging the sheep ๐Ÿ‘ dung as we wander about.
Someone has planted a lovely old rose in a small chapel adjoining the main church.
We find the graves of two merchant navy men killed in 1939 in a lonely corner.
The narrow road and misty weather donโ€™t diminish the wild beauty of Skye.
In Skye it would seem that every cottage we pass has a B&B shingle on the gate. This group of thatch cottages a lovely example.

We arrive at Elgol just in time for the rain โ˜”.  Just our luck, we have come here for the soup and the view from the lighthouse.  The soup cafe is closed today and the lighthouse in a complete whiteout of cloud.
More bloody sheep ๐Ÿ as we backtrack north, the Cullin Hills on our left and Cullin Sound on our right.

Back on the A87 we stop for fuel and the co-op supermarket, which has some great fruit on offer.  The strawberry, blackberry and raspberry are wonderful in the UK this time of year.  Continuing north again we turn off for the A863, for Dunvegan Castle.

Near Straun, the scenery is worth a stop and a leg stretch. The bay opens onto Loch Bracadale.
Just around the next bend we find this interesting sign, park and go for a walk.
Itโ€™s a steep walk up the hill to the broch. We gather a broch was a medieval round house.  Obviously the vista overlooking the loch and beyond is worth the walk.
Pam walks up from the entrance chamber of the broch.

We notice a bus arrives and discharges its cargo. So our peaceful exploration is about to be spoilt so we move on.

Itโ€™s been a long drive, but we finally arrive at Dunvegen Castle, the ancestral home of the Clan MacLeod for some 800 years.
We cough up ยฃ11pp and follow the arrows…
The castle and itโ€™s furnished rooms are beautifully maintained.
Lots of interesting pieces with notes regarding their age and origin in every room.
Like all good castles there are secret passages here and there, this one a little spooky.
A final walk through the gardens and our visit is complete.

Itโ€™s been a long day and we look in our database noting a wildcamping spot at Trumpan on the far end of the peninsula. We swing into the small carpark with another motorhome. We step out to say hi and find we ourselves talking to Ian and Jo from Brisbane.
There is nothing here but a lonely little church ruin and graveyard, which will suit us nicely for the night.
We have now seen several of these old church ruins on Skye. This one all the more delightful as the sun has appeared again.  Apparently during the english reformation hundreds of churches were sacked and many never repaired.
Skye may well be the most beautiful place we have ever visited. Last photo and I can finish this long blog…thanks for having the patience to go through it all !
